More than 1 million people arrived by boats in 2015 and more than 257,000 people between January and July 2016. A 64 per cent come from the world’s top 10 refugee-producing countries.

Italy - IOM reports an estimated 204,311 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2016 through 30 May, arriving in Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Spain.

After a surge in reported shipwrecks and other incidents at sea during the past eight days, estimated deaths through 30 May this year have risen to 2,443 on all Mediterranean routes - a 34 percent increase over the first five months of 2015.

Mixed migration movements in the first quarter of 2016 were largely reminiscent of patterns observed in 2015. Ongoing conflict, political oppression, acute poverty and harsh environmental conditions continued to drive populations from the Horn of Africa, seeking protection and better opportunities. Migrants, asylum seekers and refugees continued to face significant protection deficits including death, physical and sexual abuse and detention.

ATHENS, Greece, May 2 (UNHCR) – All Yasin Osman Ibrahim and his three-year-old son Abdulrahman could do was watch in horror as more than 500 migrants and refugees drowned two weeks ago, in one of the Mediterranean's worst shipwrecks in modern history.

Clutching Abdulrahman to his chest, Yasin stood on the deck of a wooden boat as the sea swallowed hundreds aboard a sinking, overcrowded larger boat to which people smugglers were trying to transfer them.

Greece - IOM reports that an estimated 180,245 migrants and refugees have entered Europe by sea in 2016, arriving in Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Spain, through 20 April.

Latest fatalities stand at 1,232, including nearly 500 believed to have died off Libya earlier this month. Reports first surfaced on Monday (18 April) of the deaths of several hundred migrants – believed to be mainly from the Horn of Africa. A definitive account of the tragedy has yet to be confirmed.

  • Over the reporting period (31 March –6 April) countries of first arrival (Italy, Greece, and Bulgaria) saw an average decrease of 33% in numbers of arrivals compared with the previous week. In particular, Italy saw a 59% decrease compared to previous week.

  • On 18 March , EU leaders met with their Turkish counterpart, Prime Minister of Turkey Ahmed Davutoğlu. They reached an agreement aimed at stopping the flow of irregular migration via Turkey to Europe. The main action points of the agreement are available, please see page 9.

Joint WTF, UNHCR Press Release

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has signed an agreement in Geneva with the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) that will make it easier for thousands of refugees across the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Europe to enjoy the Olympic sport and martial art of taekwondo and keep healthy.

The WTF, through a newly created Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation, will provide coaches and equipment for pilot taekwondo programmes already launched in two camps for Syrian refugees – Kilis in Turkey, and Jordan's Za'atari.
