Situation

  • Due to the lingering effects of the 2015-2016 El Niño-induced drought and multiple consecutive droughts, an estimated 8.5 million people in Ethiopia require emergency food assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). An additional 4 million chronically food-insecure people, who are supported by the Government of Ethiopia-led Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP), also require humanitarian assistance.

Key Issues

  • The UN Humanitarian Coordinator allocated US$44.7 million through the OCHA managed Ethiopia Humanitarian Fund (EHF), to address the most life-saving and time critical needs. All eligible partners are encouraged to consult respective clusters and submit their project proposal online on the Grant Management System not later than 8 August 2017.

  • An estimated US$30 million required to assist the most vulnerable Ethiopian returnees from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Highlights

· The drought in the Horn of Africa is generating a humanitarian crisis of alarming proportions. The number of people in crisis and emergency food insecurity levels Integrated Phase Classification (IPC) 3 or above in Somalia (2.9 million), Ethiopia (5.6 million) and Kenya (2.6 million) now stands at over 11 million people.

· Global acute malnutrition (GAM) levels among children aged 6-59 months, pregnant women and nursing mothers remain a serious concern, with levels of over 25 percent GAM being reported in some parts of Somalia and Kenya.
