Humanitarian activists on Thursday expressed outrage at the embezzlement by Polisario leaders of humanitarian aids sent to Tindouf camps populations in southwestern Algeria.

Speaking before the 4th Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, Eric Cameron, president of the Norwegian NGO "World Action for Refugees", lamented the inaction surrounding the Tindouf camps, noting that parties have failed in their responsibility to help these people by not seeking a political solution.

Addis Ababa, 24 June 2018: As part of his consultative missions in the region, as well as the preparation of the African Union Summit scheduled in Nouakchott on 1 and 2 July, the Chairperson of the Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, travelled to Tindouf, to meet with the authorities of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, from 19 to 21 June 2018. He was received by President Brahim Ghali, with whom he had an in-depth exchange of views. He also met with Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Salek.

  • Violent winds and heavy rains on 15 August have led to flash floods in southwest Algeria. In particular Tindouf and Laayoune Sahrawi refugee camps have been affected. 11 people were injured. Part of the infrastructure, houses and tents have reportedly been damaged and food stock lost. Stagnating water is increasing the risk of water-borne diseases. Water level remains high, hindering the access to health services.
