“During my military career in the Honduran Army,
I heard about peacekeeping operations within the UN. I joined the UN because this kind of job gives me the chance to contribute to the peace process in different parts of the world,” says Major Jose Amador, a United Nations Military Observer (UNMO) working in Mijek, Western Sahara. Major Amador is just one of over 200 UNMOS from 29 countries striving to ensure that MINURSO continues to meet its mandate in Western Sahara.

On 3 and 4 April 2012, MINURSO marked the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action with a programme by MACC (Mine Action Coordination Centre) to remember landmine and UXO victims as well as acknowledge the sacrifices of mine action workers around the world. The SRSG and Head of MINURSO Hany Abdel-Aziz chaired the ceremony and read the Secretary General’s message on the occasion.

Despite the demining activities , Western Sahara remains contaminated with mines

Western Sahara is significantly contaminated with mines as a result of earlier armed conflict between the government of Morocco and POLISARIO. A Landmine Action-managed survey east of the berm concluded at the end of 2008 identified 37 mined areas with an additional mined area identified in 2010.

There are not only sandy dunes in the landscape of the Western Sahara desert. Since 1976, an unknown quantity of Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) lay scattered across the vast territory. The result is thousands of casualties and hundred of deaths amongst local population transiting across dangerous areas in search of water and grazing land for their livestock.

On February 28, the Frente Popular para la Liberación de Saguia el-Hamra y de Río de Oro (POLISARIO) destroyed 1,506 anti-personnel mines in stockpiles. Stockpile destruction is internationally recognized as one of the pillars of mine action, hence the importance of this date for mine action in Western Sahara.
