The Security Council decided today to extend the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) until 30 April 2019, calling upon the parties to the dispute over that territory to engage constructively in resumed talks planned for the end of 2018.

Delegates of France, Papua New Guinea Give Update on New Caledonia Referendum

Western Sahara is represented by a “shadow republic”, the Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) heard today, as it continued its hearing of petitioners in the context of its general debate on decolonization questions.

At its 31st summit in Nouakchott, Mauritania the African Union (AU) decided to limit its own peace efforts in the Western Sahara in order to support the process led by the United Nations (UN). This support will be through a troika of heads of state, together with the AU Commission (AUC) chairperson. The move is a big win for Morocco, which believes the AU-led efforts are biased. However, it could set a precedent for other AU member states that disapprove of AU interventions.

After visits to Algiers, Nouakchott, Rabuni and Rabat, the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara, former German President Horst Koehler, paid a three day visit to Western Sahara from 28 June to 1 July which included meetings in Laayoune, Smara and Dakhla.

Addis Ababa, 24 June 2018: As part of his consultative missions in the region, as well as the preparation of the African Union Summit scheduled in Nouakchott on 1 and 2 July, the Chairperson of the Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, travelled to Tindouf, to meet with the authorities of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, from 19 to 21 June 2018. He was received by President Brahim Ghali, with whom he had an in-depth exchange of views. He also met with Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Salek.

The Secretary-General is closely following the developments in Western Sahara. In accordance with Security Council resolution 2414 (2018) adopted on 27 April, and in order to maintain an environment conducive to the resumption of dialogue under the auspices of his Personal Envoy, Horst Köhler, the Secretary-General calls for maximum restraint. No action should be taken which may constitute a change to the status quo.
