A third round of United Nations-backed negotiations on Western Sahara, bringing together representatives of Morocco and Frente Polisario, will take place early next month, it was announced today.

UN spokesperson Michele Montas told reporters that the next meeting of the parties is scheduled for 7-9 January in Manhasset, just outside New York City, and the site of the two previous rounds of negotiations in June and August this year.

As the Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) today concluded its review of the right of peoples to self-determination, this afternoon, acting without a vote, it approved a draft resolution, as orally amended, that would have the General Assembly designate an international year for human rights learning, commencing 10 December 2008.

ALGIERS - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today welcomed a €1 million (US$1.4 million) contribution from the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) to provide food to thousands of vulnerable Western Saharan refugees in Algeria.

"We thank ECHO for this timely donation which will help us prevent breakdowns in our food assistance pipeline for the refugees," said Omar Ali, Officer in Charge of WFP operations in Algeria.

The present report is submitted pursuant to Security Council resolution 1754 (2007) of 30 April 2007, by which the Council extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) until 31 October 2007. Overview of the 2007 Programme of Work

As the end of 2007 nears, the number of people the World Food Programme is seeking to support has risen to 83 million. The amount of food assistance required to assist these people is valued at US$3.4 billion. Considering resources mobilized thus far in 2007, the current level of funding falls short by some US$653 million.

Additional resources amounting to approximately US$800 million are required before the end of 2007 to ensure uninterrupted food aid deliveries for ongoing activities.

Con un presupuesto de 250.000 euros se están repartiendo, algo más de 100.000 Kg. de carne de camello (pesada en vivo).
