The 2017 Sudan Participatory Assessment, conducted between October and December 2017, involved 6,009 Persons of Concern to UNHCR engaged through some 385 semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, individual interviews and participatory observation sessions. This assessment exercise was conducted by UNHCR in collaboration with partners, actively supported by the Government of Sudan, to engage refugees, asylum-seekers and refugee returnees – women, men, girls and boys of di fferent age, gender, nationality and ability – to identify their needs and examine ways to address them.

Highlights

• 62,927 children were immunized against measles by the Ministry of Health (MoH), with support from UNICEF.

• UNICEF supported the Government of the State of Eritrea (GoSE) to reach 18,914 acutely malnourished children under 5, treating 4,518 for severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and 14,396 for moderate acute malnutrition (MAM).

• Training on Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) and Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) counselling was provided to more than 235 health workers and 620 community volunteers.

ECW Annual Results Report: Over 650,000 Children Reached in the Fund’s First Year of Operations

New York, 6 July 2018 – The just-released ECW annual results report shows ECW’s investments have reached more than 650,000 children and youth affected by conflict and natural disasters during the Fund’s first year of operations from April 2017 to March 2018. In total ECW invested US$82 million in 14 crisis-affected countries.

Comprehensive Level 3 (L3) registration launched in Ethiopia in 06 July 2017 starting from Addis Ababa. L3 registration was intensively implemented in Addis Ababa during November 2017.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

  • A briquette making factory implemented by Organization for Sustainable Development (OSD) became operational in 2017, to cater for alternative energy provision to refugees and the host community. .

  • In December 2017, the Ethiopian Roads Authority completed the repair of a collapsed bridge connecting the road to the camp, making the camp more accessible.

  • Construction of additional classrooms in the primary school and in-patient wards at the Health Center were completed.

By supporting UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, you delivered assistance to families who have been forced to flee war or persecution in their time of greatest need. Thanks to you, we made sure that they received shelter, essential supplies such as blankets and kitchen supplies, food, clean water, and access to vital services. Together, we also helped to protect their rights and give them a safe place to call home.

UNHCR and WFP appeal for urgent support to provide food to refugees in Ethiopia. Without it, ration cuts will drastically impact the integrity of refugees across the country.

14,668 South Sudanese refugees have been registered in Ethiopia since the beginning of year.

1,589 vital events certificates have been issued to refugees since the launch of the vital events registration policy in October 2017.

In 2017, the ICRC worked to address the needs of vulnerable groups and individuals, partnering with national bodies in order to do so as effectively as possible. Attention to humanitarian affairs in Ethiopia was understandably focused on the response to internally displaced persons and drought.
