Recent years of drought are creating a life-threatening situation for people in Kenya. Catholic Relief Services' programs can go a long way toward easing the suffering of Kenyans who rely on the all-too-precious rainfall for the basic necessities of life. Over 3.5 million people in Kenya are in need of food aid because of the current drought -- a jump of at least 1 million since December 2005.

More than 12 million people are now in need of food and international commitments are falling far short of the more than 1 million tons (944,280 metric tons) of aid needed to feed them through the end of this year. As the number of people in need continues to grow, existing food rations are being cut in order to feed as many people as possible.

The agency also reported that nearly half of Eritrea's population will be in need of food assistance as conditions worsen.
