Migration trends

As of 8 February 2017, there have been 11,233 new arrivals to Greece, Italy and Bulgaria, as countries of first arrival to Europe, including more than 9,000 to Italy. This is an increase for Italy of almost one third against the same period in 2016.

1. Summary

In November 2015, more than 1,000 Cuban nationals were reported to be camped out at the Paso Canoas border crossing with Panama. In view of requirements for entering the country and the fact that these migrants did not meet them, a significant amount of people began to congregate in this border community, taking to living in the streets while they waited for a solution to their immigration status. The Costa Rican government issued permits allowing migrants to enter the country and continue on their way to the United States.

One in three Syrian refugees suffers from depression, anxiety, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, a Swedish Red Cross study has found.

Mental health problems are common among newly-resettled refugees and asylum seekers searching for safety in in Sweden, especially among those from war-torn Syria. Disturbingly, as many as 30 per cent of Syrian refugees report that they have experienced some form of torture in the past.

It is believed that 3.4 per cent of the world's population is living outside its country of origin; this represents more than 247 million people.

British and French Red Cross volunteers have carried out a joint aid operation to help refugees and migrants in northern France. Volunteers and staff from both National Societies have distributed 1,300 parcels of emergency supplies in five camps.

Conditions in the camps are squalid and people have little protection from the winter weather.

The largest of the camps visited by Red Cross teams was in Grand-Synthe, close to Dunkirk.

Overview

Throughout 2014, the regional office continued working in 15 countries in Eastern Africa and Indian Ocean Islands; Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Comoros, Seychelles, Mauritius, Rwanda and Burundi. The regional office supported the development of 6 emergency appeals and 15 DREFs in response to floods, disease outbreaks, terror attacks and population movement in Comoros, Madagascar, Seychelles, Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is deeply concerned by the news that on Monday, 13 April, a boat capsized about 120 kilometres south of Lampedusa Island. So far around 140 people have been rescued, but 400 others are still believed missing.

Since January 2015, the tensions in Yemen turned into a conflict which forced the President, Mr Hadi, to flee the capital Sanaa in February. In late March, the President requested a coalition led by Saudi Arabia to intervene and launched air strikes on Houthi targets. The coalition comprises five Gulf Arab states as well as Jordan, Egypt, Morocco and Sudan.

With the European spring having arrived, the seas are calmer and safer, and this normally leads to an increase in migration, which both authorities and aid agencies try to prepare for.

Summary: On 5 August 2011 IFRC and ERCS launched the Preliminary Drought Emergency Appeal for CHF 10,978,250 to assist 165,000 beneficiaries with humanitarian assistance over 6 months. To address increasing needs at the time, the appeal was revised on 26 September 2011 to 28,408,085 CHF (25,408,085 CHF plus 3,000,000 CHF for bilateral emergency response support) to assist approximately 570,000 beneficiaries over 12 months in Oromia, Afar and Somali regions.

The IFRC Regional Representation for Eastern Africa and Indian Ocean Islands, as part of the IFRC Africa Zone, supports National Societies (NS) to train and mobilise volunteers to respond to emergencies and to make communities more resilient to risks. It aims to make this work sustainable by bringing evidence-based cases of the benefits of Red Cross/Red Crescent volunteer action to new and existing stakeholders in the humanitarian and development sector.
