The two-part panel focused on ongoing threats in Africa’s so-called “Arc of Instability”, a region which encompasses the Sahel, the Lake Chad Region and the Horn of Africa.

In 2011, all eyes were on the Dadaab refugee complex in northern Kenya as it received hundreds of thousands of Somalis fleeing famine and conflict. This year, attention has shifted to the refugee exodus from Syria, even though the majority of Somalis who arrived at Dadaab last year are still there.

The conflict that began in Libya on 17 February 2011 with a popular revolt against Gaddafi’s regime has triggered a mass exodus of the civilian population into neighbouring countries. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled, mainly into Tunisia and Egypt, as a result of attacks by Gaddafi’s forces on civilian populations, the rebellion and NATO bombings. Migrant workers and refugees from Sub-Saharan Africa have been particular targets of violence.

Humanitarian agencies have provided assistance in accessible areas of the state, but insecurity has constrained aid delivery.   • North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) airstrikes reportedly struck a military installation in Tripoli today, according to international news sources. In Misratah, news reports indicate that pro-Qadhafi forces launched attacks on a residential area near the opposition-controlled port this morning. Pro-Qadhafi forces have also intensified attacks on the western city of Zintan in recent days, resulting in an increased number of individuals fleeing into Tunisia.

RAS ADJIR, Tunisia, April 5 (UNHCR) – One camp, many complexities. That's what the UN refugee agency's Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie encountered on Tuesday when she visited a camp near the Tunisian-Libyan border.

Jolie was on a two-day visit to Tunisia to highlight the plight of nearly 440,000 people who had fled Libya into surrounding countries since early March. More than half of them are in Tunisia, most of them migrants who had been working in Libya, but also some 2,500 people from war-torn countries.

In Libya, the repression escalates following the revolt movements of the population.

Considering the recent events and the thousands of refugees fleeing Libya, a TSF team left the international headquarters on 23 February to Tunisia and reached the Libyan border today to support the refugees.

Tunisians flee the country in hundreds, followed by several refugees from Egypt, Sudan, Iraq, Eritrea, Somalia, Chad and the Palestinian territories, and by the first Libyan civilians. Much of the foreign nationals have already left the country.

We have no access at this time to the refugee community. Over the past months we have been trying to regularize our presence in Libya, and this has constrained our work.

Some of the reports we are getting from third-party sources are very worrying.

La situation relative au Criquet pèlerin reste préoccupante au Soudan. Malgré les efforts en lutte du mois de novembre, des ailés ont formé de petits groupes qui se sont déplacés vers le nord-est du Soudan o=F9 ils ont pondu, tandis que plusieurs autres groupes ont traversé la mer Rouge en direction de la côte septentrionale de l'Arabie saoudite. Si de bonnes pluies tombent dans ces deux pays, les effectifs acridiens pourraient augmenter rapidement et menacer la région.

As of September 6, three non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including USAID/OFDA grantees, had resumed health, nutrition, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) activities in Kalma internally displaced persons (IDP) camp following a period of access restrictions from late July through August, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The majority of basic humanitarian services in Kalma have resumed at a reduced level.
