The European Union and Africa enjoy a long-standing and comprehensive partnership, which has deepened and diversified over decades and in particular since the first Africa-EU Summit in 2000. The Valletta Summit in November 2015 complemented already existing processes with African Countries, focusing on different aspects of migration.

African borders and their lack of clear demarcation have been identified as one of the root causes of conflict on the continent. The African Union’s Border Programme (AUPB) works toward reducing this conflict risk.

The PSC Report spoke to Ambassador Aguibou Diarrah, head of the AUPB in the Peace and Security Department.

What is the Border Programme all about?

The aim of the programme is the structural prevention of conflicts. We are constantly faced with the need to solve violent crises, but the aim is to prevent them, to anticipate conflicts.

16 October 2014 – The African Sahel region needs more resources, more joint action and faster ways to deal with the structural challenges, like climate change, and successes on peace processes in Darfur, northern Mali and Libya, a senior United Nations humanitarian today said.

Robert Piper, the UN Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Sahel, told journalists in New York that the world body remains “very, very concerned” about the region, which stretches from Mauritania to Eritrea, including Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Sudan.

5 November 2013 – “We are here for you,” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told people of the Sahel today, kicking off a visit to the region with international development leaders to listen to local priorities and to link political, security, development and humanitarian efforts there.

“We have partnered together in this extraordinary way because we recognize that the Sahel region needs an extraordinary effort,” Mr. Ban told the opening of Meeting on the Sahel in Bamako, Mali, presided over by President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

  • Moderate to heavy rains continue to push north across the Sahel.
  • Moderate seasonal rainfall deficits grow across northwestern Ethiopia, southern Eritrea and bordering Sudan.

1) During much of May and the beginning of June, intermittent and insufficient rains had increased rainfall deficits over parts of northeastern Nigeria, resulting in poor NDVI values and delayed planting. However, recent moderate to heavy rains have decreased seasonal rainfall deficits.
