  • Ethiopia made nine pledges to comprehensively respond to refugee needs and is formulating a National Comprehensive Refugee Response Strategy (NCRRS)

  • The Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF) was launched in Ethiopia in November 2017.

  • The Operating Plan for the refugee response in Ethiopia in 2018 is USD 327.8 million. This plan is currently funded at 21%.

Introduction

Ethiopia has a long standing history of hosting refugees. In 2004, a National Refugee Law was enacted based on the international and regional refugee conventions to which Ethiopia is a party. Currently, the country is host to some 905,800 refugees, the majority from South Sudan (46.6%), Somalia (28.4%), Eritrea (19.2%) and Sudan (4.9%). As conflicts are ongoing in neighbouring countries, refugees continue to enter Ethiopia on a daily basis, making it the second largest refugee-hosting country in Africa.

There is a powerful wind of hope blowing across the Horn of Africa region, said UN chief António Guterres on Sunday, in Saudi Arabia to witness the signing of a peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea, ending decades of simmering conflict.

Saudi Arabia facilitated the agreement, and in a message on Twitter, the Foreign Ministry said that the accord, signed in Jeddah “is a historic milestone for the peoples of Ethiopia and Eritrea, and will contribute to strengthening security and stability in the region at large”.

The rapidly warming ties between Eritrea and Ethiopia took another step forward Tuesday when the once-bitter rivals reopened their shared border afer two decades.

Yemane Meskel, Eritrea's information minister, announced the historic event on Twitter "President Isaias Afwerki & Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today officially opened the Debay Sima - Burre border point between the two countries for road transport connectivity," Meskel wrote, referring to the Eritrean president and Ethiopian prime minister respectively.

DAKAR, Sept 10 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Nearly 100 human trafficking victims have been rescued in a major police operation in Sudan, including dozens of children forced to work in illegal gold mines, Interpol said on Monday.

Operation Sawiyan involved 200 Sudanese police officers who rescued 94 people, including 85 minors, from criminal networks in and around the capital, Khartoum, in an Interpol-led week-long crackdown last month, the global police organisation said.

WASHINGTON — The Horn of Africa continued to resolve diplomatic impasses with the announcement Friday that Eritrea and Djibouti will normalize relations. Leaders in the region, and beyond, are celebrating the development, which promises to end a decade-long dispute and follows renewed diplomatic ties between Eritrea and both Ethiopia and Somalia in July.

The agreement reached among the four Ministers to work together to restore peace and stability in the region is a positive example for the Horn and beyond.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in a joint effort with IOM, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), UNOCHA and the Libyan Department for Combatting Illegal Migration (DCIM), organised on Tuesday an urgent evacuation of some 300 refugees and migrants held in Ain Zara detention centre in Tripoli. Tensions have been on the rise in the capital in recent days and armed groups are fighting in the immediate vicinity of the centre. Hundreds of refugees and migrants detained in Ain Zara were in clear danger of getting caught in the hostilities.
