Introduction

The EASO Quarterly Asylum Report is produced by EASO’s Centre for Information,
Documentation and Analysis. It aims to provide an overview of key asylum trends by analysing data on applications for international protection, pending cases and decisions made on applications by EU Member States and Associated Countries.

The analysis is based on data submitted to Eurostat as per Article 4 of the Migration Statistics Regulation and extracted from Eurostat database on 8 January 2015.

This guide examines the broad topic of communication and its role in a range of different humanitarian and complex emergency situations. Such situations demand communication initiatives that support and promote humanitarian relief efforts, conflict reduction processes, and post-conflict transition and recovery.

Summary

We are publishing this newsletter as an exciting year is coming to an end. Our programs are moving along well, and we see a strengthened relationship between the UN and the government. With the revival of the Eritrean De-velopment Partners Forum this year, the UN and devel-opment partners have also formalized a forum for shar-ing and discussing how to best partner with Eritrea in its efforts for self-reliance and development. We aim to strengthen and build on this in 2015.

December 2014 Kenya is currently hosting some 574 000 refugees and asylum seekers, a number which continues to grow rapidly due to the refugee influx from South Sudan.

On 5 November 2014, WFP, together with UNHCR, formally informed the donor community that a 50% rations' cut would take place from the second distribution cycle in November and would be likely to last until the end of January 2015.

The aim of this project is to ascertain how businesses and governments in eight global cities are contributing towards the integration of migrant and refugee populations, either through specialized outreach programmes, the provision of services or targeted funding of nongovernmental organizations, and to what extent these contributions can be deepened or expanded. Perhaps a more important goal is to determine whether and how business and cities are currently working together to create opportunities for migrants and refugees and deepen their integration into society.

Mendefera, 28 December 2014- Mr. Solomon Tesfai, head of the health center in the Molqi sub-zone, indicated that members of the Ministry of Health in collaboration village elders are exerting efforts to raise the awareness of the public on the causes and consequences on TB.

He further explained that the prevalence of the disease has been significantly being reduced in the sub-zone, and called on the public to reinforce participation so that to reduce the prevalence of the disease to zero sum level.

European Governments Should Rely on UN Reports, Support UN Inquiry

(Brussels, December 17, 2014) – A Danish immigration report on Eritrea that suggests changing refugee policy for Eritrean asylum seekers is deeply flawed. Denmark and other European governments should await the outcome of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Eritrea, established in June 2014, before considering any major policy changes concerning Eritrea.

Iraq: 700,000 IDPs, mostly in Dahuk and Anbar governorates, are living in shelters that are not adapted for winter temperatures. 945,000 IDPs are in dire need of kerosene for heating.

Afghanistan: Kabul has been hit by at least 12 suicide attacks since early November, with more attacks also carried out elsewhere, fuelling concerns about the protection of civilians.

Asmara, 14 December 2014- An agreement on supporting youth employment and skills development project has been signed on 14 December in Asmara between the Norwegian Government and UNDP.

The agreement is aimed at establishing training centers that could help develop the capacity of Eritrean youth as well as providing training for Eritrean women that would enable them improve their livelihood.

Swarms laying eggs on Red Sea coast in Sudan

During the first week of December, groups of adults and swarms were seen laying eggs on the Red Sea coast of Sudan near Port Sudan, Suakin and in the Tokar Delta. Groups of adults were also present along the central coastal plains between Port Sudan and Tokar and on the southern coastal plains near Aiterba and Karora, close to the border of Eritrea. Control operations treated 7,000 ha during the first week of the month, of which 6,200 ha were by air.

Italy - Days before International Migrants Day – observed on December 18th – Italy’s Ministry of the Interior has released November and year-to-date data on migrant arrivals by sea. Through November 30, 2014 Italy reports 163,368 migrants have been rescued at sea this year.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • World cereal production in 2014 is forecast to surpass last year’s record, boosting stocks to a 15-year high.

  • Maize export prices increased significantly in November supported by lower than previously expected yields of the 2014 crop in the United States of America. Wheat export prices strengthened in general, while rice quotations declined. Overall, however, cereal export prices persisted at levels below those of a year earlier, reflecting ample global supplies.
