Total 2012 figures of migrants between Djibouti and Yemen: In 2012, a total of 107,532 persons arrived on the shores of Yemen. The number of migrants arriving in Yemen in 2012; were a 4 per cent increase from the 103,532 persons who arrived in Yemen in 2011, and more than double the 53,382 migrants who arrived in Yemen in 2010. 75 per cent or 80,465 persons who arrived in Yemen in 2012 travelled via Djibouti.

As of 31 of December 2012, Ethiopia hosted a total of 376,410 refugees: 223,243 (59.31%) Somalis, 86,177 (22.89%) Sudanese, 62,996 (16.74%) Eritreans and 3,994 (1.06%) from other nationalities. The cumulative figure includes an estimated 20,000 unregistered refugees from South Sudan who are staying with the host communities along the border in Wanthawo Woreda in Western Ethiopia. In November 4,580 new refugees were registered in Ethiopia, while in December the number of new arrivals doubled and reached 10,417.

Massawa, 27 December 2012 – Heavy rainfall in the port city of Massawa and its environs, namely Emberemi, Hirgigo and Dogoli has caused big human and property loss at dawn yesterday.

Reports indicated that 8 people and 20 livestock died from the calamity in Emberemi area, while one national went missing after falling into a river gush. Besides, the disaster completely destroyed 30 houses in Hitumlo and Amatere areas of the port city, as an overflow of Segedeli River washed away 7 livestock and 3 houses in Hirgigo area.

This Revised Emergency Appeal shows a reduced budget from CHF 25,408,085 to CHF 12,258,425; in cash, kind, or services to support the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) in assisting approximately 270,000 beneficiaries. The operational timeframe has been extended for 12 months; therefore the end of the operation will be on 31 August 2013. A final report will be made available by 30 November 2013 (three months after the end of the operation).

Asmara, 26 December 2012 – The Ministry of Land, Water and Environment indicated that potable water supply facilities have been put in place in 26 villages in the year 2012 in collaboration with stakeholders and popular participation, while implementation of 16 others is underway. It further pointed out that the potable water supply facilities comprise reservoirs, distribution stations and pipelines, and that 20 of them utilize solar energy, while the rest 6 are electricity generator-powered.

Tropical cyclone Evan hit Samoa and Fiji on 13 and 16 December. As a category 4 storm, Evan caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure on both islands. 3,500 people were evacuated to emergency shelters in Fiji. In Samoa 1,500 were evacuated and 2 killed.Typhoon Bopha (Pablo) made landfall in the southern Philippines on 4 December, carrying winds of up to 160 kilometres an hour.
