Highlights

  • The government-led multi-agency humanitarian needs assessment started on 18 November 2017 and will continue until 13 December 2017. The findings will inform the Humanitarian Requirements Document (HRD) for 2018. Preliminary estimates are that 5 to 7 million people will require food support and 7.4 million people will require access to safe water.

  • A high rate of 17.6 per cent of Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) is recorded among Yemeni refugees residing in Markazi camp. UNICEF is providing support for the treatment of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) cases and ensuring that preventive and curative services are provided.

  • About 30,000 (90 per cent of target) children under the age of five received one dose of Vitamin A supplementation since the beginning of the year. A total of 2,566 (46 per cent of target) children under the age of 5 suffering from SAM were treated.

Overview

Arrivals in the Mediterranean from 01 January until 30 June 2017 total 102,847 (Greece, Italy, Spain and Cyprus, including arrivals to the Canary Islands and by land to Spain). This compares to 231,075 for the same period in 2016. In the first half of the year, 9,286 persons arrived in Greece by sea (158,377 arrived during same period in 2016, a decrease by 94%).

  • WFP is urgently required to scale up its assistance from 1.2 million to 1.6 million people in the Somali Region due to the worsening food insecurity situation.

  • The 2017 drought is currently impacting the Southern and Southern-East part of the country the most, as well as areas of the Southern Nations Nationalities People’s Region (SNNPR). In addition, the refugee influx from South Sudan and Somalia remain a concern.

Ethiopia - IOM has begun providing emergency transportation assistance for Eritrean refugees to access humanitarian services in refugee camps in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. A recent spike at the beginning of 2017 saw over 4,500 refugees crossing the Eritrea-Ethiopia border and in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

Migration trends

As of 8 February 2017, there have been 11,233 new arrivals to Greece, Italy and Bulgaria, as countries of first arrival to Europe, including more than 9,000 to Italy. This is an increase for Italy of almost one third against the same period in 2016.
