Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 167,724 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2017 through 13 December, with just over 70 per cent arriving in Italy and the remainder divided between Greece, Cyprus and Spain. This compares with 358,018 arrivals across the region through the same period last year.

Between 1 January and 30 November 2017, 15,540 unaccompanied and separated children arrived in Italy by sea, representing 13% of all sea arrivals in this period. Similarly, 14 per cent of those arriving in the same period last year were UASC. The numbers of UASC arriving by sea, however, have decreased compared to last year, when over 24,600 UASC were registered at landing points in the January-November period.

Overview

Between 1 January and 30 November 2017, 117,042 persons arrived in Italy by sea.
This is a 32% decrease compared to sea arrivals in the same period last year (173,008). In November 2017, 5,645 persons reached Italy by sea, compared to 13,581 registered at landing points in November 2016. Sea arrivals in November were slightly lower than in the previous month, when almost 6,000 persons reached Italian shores.

DATA, MEDIA COVERAGE ANALYSIS, FOSTER CARE FOR UNACCOMPANIED AND SEPARATED CHILDREN IN ITALY

(6 December 2017) The plight of many unaccompanied and separated children (UASC) arriving in Italy through Central Mediterranean routes – currently the most dangerous access corridor to Europe – was recently discussed at an Innocenti Seminar “Forced Displacement of Children in the Italian Context.”

The seminar showcased data, policy and media research to ignite discussion, explore linkages and consider potential future work in this area.
