As the brutal conflict continues in Syria, millions of people continue to be in need. Hundreds of thousands have been killed in the conflict between the Assad regime, extremist groups and moderate opposition groups. In response to the crisis, the UK has committed £2.71 billion2 since 2012. This includes DFID allocations to over 30 implementing partners (including United Nations agencies, international non-governmental organisations and the Red Cross) and is helping to meet the immediate needs of vulnerable people in Syria and of refugees in the region.

REGIONAL OVERVIEW

According to UNHCR, 5,600,199 have now fled Syria to surrounding countries in the region. 1.4 million of them fled in 2014 alone with an average of more than 3.935 people per day. In 2015 more than 617,188 Syrians fled the country, an average of more than 1,714 per day. In 2017 more than 623,374 Syrians fled the country, an average of more than 1,731 per day.
Children now make up 45% of the refugee population, meaning there are an estimated 2,520,089 refugee children in the region.

Upsurge of CCHF cases in Afghanistan

An upsurge in the number of the reported cases of Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) from Afghanistan has been reported during 2018. The increase is mainly in Herat province in the western part of the country. As of week 25-2018, a total of 125 cases including 18 deaths (CFR=14.4%) have been reported countrywide.

The conflict in Syria still continues to drive the largest refugee crisis in the world – there are over 5.6 million Syrian refugees registered, with over 2.6 million being children, in a region faced with deepening economic, social and development challenges.
Host countries have demonstrated outstanding generosity to Syrian refugees for many years despite the huge pressure on national services and infrastructure – the international community must enhance their support to these countries on the front line, providing a global public good.
