The conflict in Syria has created one of the most severe and protracted humanitarian crises in the world today. Millions have been displaced both inside the country and outside as refugees, especially in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. The crisis continues to devastate the country and shows few signs of letting up in the near future.

Even in these circumstances, UNFPA believes that every Syrian woman, adolescent girl and child has the right to reproductive health and protection from gender-based violence.

Egypt remains a destination and transit country for refugees and asylumseekers, most of whom live in urban areas.

Currently, 228,941 refugees and asylum-seekers of 58 different nationalities are registered with UNHCR Egypt. More than half of them are from Syria.

UNHCR registers and documents refugees and asylum-seekers and facilitates their access to basic services, such as health and education.

Currently, 227,077 refugees and asylum-seekers of 58 different nationalities are registered with UNHCR Egypt. More than half of them are from Syria.

9,711 people have registered with UNHCR Egypt since the beginning of 2018; 4,641 registered in March and April.

Highlights

  • UNICEF continued to respond to emerging IDP influx with multi-sectoral life-saving assistance. In East Ghouta in Syria, 60,500 IDPs had access to safe drinking water and sanitation services, including 50,000 people in Duma through water-trucking. 1,700 school-age children accessed education through the rehabilitation of 18 classrooms in Dweir IDP shelter.

In 2017, IOM continued to respond to the needs of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and affected communities across Syria through its operations from Damascus, Gaziantep and Amman. Over the course of the year, IOM provided assistance – in the form of Non-Food Items (NFIs), Shelter, Logistics, Coordination, Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCM), Early Recovery and Livelihoods, Protection and Health - to over 800,000 individuals in Syria.

Ahead of the second Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region, the European Union ran an online consultation in February 2018 to seek the views of organisations working in Syria, Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan. The consultation sought partners' views on potential themes for the conference, key challenges, lessons learned and best practice, and included a separate question on social cohesion between refugee and host communities. 108 responses to the consultation were received.

• In Syria, UNICEF has reached 305,600 people in 140 hard-to-reach locations with life-saving interventions and critical services and participated in an ICRC/UN Inter-Agency convoy to the besieged location in East Ghouta in February delivering supplies for about 9,000 people, and carrying-out rapid multi-sectoral needs assessments.
