Egypt is a destination country along the central Mediterranean refugee route with people arriving from both the Middle East and east Africa. A growing population of concern is stranded in the most overcrowded and poorest neighbourhoods of its largest cities such as Cairo and Alexandria as a result of an upward trend of new arrivals and tightened control measures aimed at curbing irregular outflows towards Europe.

BERLIN – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) this week welcomes a generous contribution of US$218 m (€185 m) from Germany to continue providing a lifeline of support for Syrians affected by the ongoing conflict.
Three aircrafts carrying 1.8 ton of humanitarian aid that will be sent to the Gaza Strip by land through the Rafah border crossing landed on Monday evening in the east of Cairo.
This humanitarian aid is sent upon the high instructions of HM King Mohammed VI in order to be delivered to the Palestinian people.
The reception of this aid was supervised by Morocco's ambassador to Egypt, Ahmad Tazi, who is also the Kingdom's permanent representative to the Arab League.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has arranged for a comprehensive financing of 2.5 million euros through the Africa Fund to support the activities of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Niger and Egypt. The 1.5-million-euro project titled “Direct Assistance to Abandoned Migrants” aims to boost the presence of the IOM in the north-eastern regions of Niger bordering with Algeria, in order to provide emergency assistance and medical aid to migrants and support their voluntary return to their Countries of origin.

As the conflict in Syria entered its eighth year, neighbouring countries continue to show great generosity in shouldering the weight of the crisis in terms of hosting refugees. As of June 2018, over 5.6 million Syrian refugees were registered in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt. Nevertheless, host countries continue to contend with mounting demographic, economic, political, security and social pressures. Across the region, borders and admission practices remained closely managed, affecting the displacement ability of many individuals.
