Libya, an oil rich North African country, has been under the control of Moammar Gadhafi since 1969. After a recent spate of regime changes throughout the region, the Libyan people took to the streets in February to demand that he step down. A violent crisis has ensued. As of March 1, 2011, the east of the country is under the control of the opposition and Tripoli and the west remains under the control of the Gadhafi regime. Reports coming out of Tripoli indicate that armed groups supporting Gadhafi continue to carry out violent attacks against civilians on a daily basis.
