EWARN in humanitarian emergencies

As many as seven countries– Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Syria in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region have established an early warning system for disease outbreaks with a view to early detecting and rapidly investigating any public health event of potential concern. Such a system, in the absence of a routine disease surveillance system, needs continuous monitoring and assessment using a set of performance benchmarks.

Influenza: Burden of disease estimation in Saudi Arabia

On July 2018, the Ministry of Health of Saudi Arabia conducted a three-day workshop on the estimation of the influenza burden using Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) surveillance data. During the workshop, 12 participants from different regions of the country were trained by influenza experts from Infection Hazard Management unit (IHM) of WHO Regional office for Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO).

Cholera situation in Eastern Mediterranean Region 2017

Cholera remains a threat to public health and claims lives in the countries of Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). During 2017, a total of 1,108,584 suspected cases of cholera including 3,273 related deaths (case fatality rate—CFR: 0.30%) were reported to WHO by seven Member States in the EMR.

Upsurge of CCHF cases in Afghanistan

An upsurge in the number of the reported cases of Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) from Afghanistan has been reported during 2018. The increase is mainly in Herat province in the western part of the country. As of week 25-2018, a total of 125 cases including 18 deaths (CFR=14.4%) have been reported countrywide.

Health threats reported in 2017

In 2017, a variety of emerging and reemerging infectious disease threats were reported in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). Most of the threats began in 2016, including chikungunya in Pakistan, or were already endemic in the country, for example, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in Afghanistan. However, new threats, such as diphtheria in Yemen, have also been observed this year.

Declining trend of cholera in Somalia

Data from the Ministry of Health in Somalia suggests that the cholera outbreak reported in 2017 in the country is gradually levelling off. The number of cholera cases and deaths have significantly decreased in recent months and no deaths were recorded from August up to November.
The number of cases reported during the month of November is the lowest in 2017.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever in Afghanistan

The Ministry of Public Health in Afghanistan recently reported an increase in the number of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) cases in the country. In 2017, a total of 237 cases of CCHF including 41 deaths (CFR: 17.2%) have been reported throughout 27 provinces.
Majority of these cases-71 cases including 13 associated deaths (CFR: 18.3%), were reported from the capital city, Kabul.

Dengue in Sudan

The Federal Ministry of Health in Sudan has recently reported an increase in suspected dengue fever cases during the period of epi week 40 and 47. A total of 90 suspected cases including 2 deaths (CFR: 2.2%) were reported across the states of Khartoum, Kassala, East Darfur, West Darfur, South Kordofan and Red Sea. The highest number of cases (80 suspected cases with no associated death) was reported in Kassala state.

Diphtheria in Yemen

A significant increase in suspected diphtheria cases has recently been reported in Yemen between epidemiological week no 33 and 44. A total number of 118 suspected cases including 10 deaths (CFR: ing 9 associated deaths (CFR: 8.7%). 8.5%), were reported in 10 governorates of the country. Majority of these cases– about 103 were reported from Ibb governorate, including 9 associated deaths (CFR: 8.7%).

Cholera Roadmap

Cholera morbidity and mortality continues in communities with high vulnerability imposed by tragedies such as disasters and conflicts. Currently Yemen is facing the world’s largest cholera outbreak, with over 900,000 suspected cases and more than 2,200 associated deaths reported since April 2016. Over 1000 cholera associated deaths were reported globally from the cholera endemic countries this year.

Deaths from Dengue in Pakistan

Pakistan is endemic for Dengue fever (DF) since 1994. The country faced a number of repeated outbreaks in different provinces during last two decades. The recorded peak transmission season of DF virus is during July to October/ November. This year an outbreak was reported from the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 69 deaths reported from this outbreak so far.

In August 2017, 3RP partners involved in 3RP response in Egypt have provided 11,694 curative and preventive Primary Healthcare consultations to Syrian girls, boys, women and men. Among those, 5,716 patients were followed up and received monthly treatment for their non-communicable diseases. Also among them, 1,705 under 5 girls and boys received routine immunization and growth monitoring services. Beyond the primary healthcare level, 1,308 referrals to secondary, tertiary and emergency care were provided to those in need among them 155 referrals were life-saving emergencies.

In June 2017, 3RP partners involved in 3RP response in Egypt have provided 8,254 curative and preventive Primary Healthcare consultations to Syrian girls, boys, women and men. Among those, 3,949 patients were followed up and received monthly treatment for their non-communicable diseases. Also among them, 1,348 under 5 girls and boys received routine immunization and growth monitoring services. Beyond the primary healthcare level, 351 referrals to secondary, tertiary and emergency care were provided to those in need among them 15 referrals were life-saving emergencies.
