July 16, 2018 (KHARTOUM) - Sudan’s Higher Committee to Combat Human Trafficking said it would develop a national anti-trafficking strategy as well as activating existing laws to counter the phenomenon in accordance with the established international standards.

In a meeting chaired by Vice-President Hassabo Mohamed Abdel-Rahman on Sunday, the committee discussed legal frameworks to combat human trafficking besides humanitarian and social effects of the phenomenon.

Dengue in Sudan

The Federal Ministry of Health in Sudan has recently reported an increase in suspected dengue fever cases during the period of epi week 40 and 47. A total of 90 suspected cases including 2 deaths (CFR: 2.2%) were reported across the states of Khartoum, Kassala, East Darfur, West Darfur, South Kordofan and Red Sea. The highest number of cases (80 suspected cases with no associated death) was reported in Kassala state.

At least three people died and fifteen others were infected with cholera in Sennar state in southern Sudan last week. New cases were reported in North Kordofan and White Nile.

One patient died and four others were infected with cholera in El Turous in El Dali locality, and in El Mazmoum locality in Sennar on Wednesday. The isolation centre in El Mazmoum Hospital received five new cases on Friday, one of which died.

The majority are men aged 25–40, and they come from a wide range of socioeconomic and educational backgrounds.

The death toll of the heatwave that is striking Sudan's Northern State increased to 16 on Saturday.

The authorities of Wadi Halfa at the Sudanese-Egyptian border, announced on Saturday that an Egyptian expatriate died that morning of a heatstroke.

Two others were admitted to the Wadi Halfa Hospital in a bad condition. One of them, an Ethiopian, was transferred to the intensive care unit.

Egyptian authorities deported 20 Sudanese nationals to Sudan via Cairo airport on Saturday. They were arrested while trying to illegally cross the border into Libya. From the Libyan coast, fishing boats filled with immigrants leave for Italy.

A security official disclosed to the Egyptian newspaper El Fadjer that the airport security said the Sudanese arrived in the security section of Mersa Matruh. The Sudanese Embassy issued travel documents to them there as they lacked passports, and then deported the group to Khartoum.

Swarms laying eggs on Red Sea coast in Sudan

During the first week of December, groups of adults and swarms were seen laying eggs on the Red Sea coast of Sudan near Port Sudan, Suakin and in the Tokar Delta. Groups of adults were also present along the central coastal plains between Port Sudan and Tokar and on the southern coastal plains near Aiterba and Karora, close to the border of Eritrea. Control operations treated 7,000 ha during the first week of the month, of which 6,200 ha were by air.
