CAIRO, 26 Dec 2006 (IRIN) - Sudanese refugee community leaders are claiming that their living conditions in the Egyptian capital are worse than ever, one year after scores of their members were killed by Egyptian troops.

The precise number of Sudanese refugees living in Egypt is not known, however observers put the number between one and three million.

Security

The security situation in the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA)-affected areas east of the Nile River deteriorated over the reporting period. Clashes between the LRA and the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) were reported in a number of locations south and south-east of Juba in Central Equatoria. Two ambushes targeting civilian vehicles were also reported on the Juba-Nimule road.

Security

The general security situation in South Sudan remained stable. The situation in the Malakal area (Upper Nile) continued to stabilize with the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) discussing the option of appointing Gabriel Tang as the Joint Integrated Unit (JIU) - SAF component - Commander. The security level in Malakal and other previously affected parts was reviewed downwards.

CAIRO, 12 Jul 2006 (IRIN) - The Red Crescent Society in Egypt has denied reports that four Palestinians stranded on the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip had died as a result of poor conditions. In contrast, the NGO says it has provided fully for the needs of the Palestinians.

"The needs of the Palestinians stranded at Rafah are well catered for," said Red Crescent Society director general Magda al- Shirbini.

KHARTOUM, Apr 4, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Sudanese President Omer al- Bashir and his visiting Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak agreed Tuesday on the necessity to resolve the conflict in Sudan's western restive region of Darfur by peaceful means.

At a joint press conference following their meeting, both al- Bashir and Mubarak stressed the importance to settle the Darfur conflict without interventions by powers outside the Arab and African worlds.

The security situation in Equatoria remained volatile with several attacks and cases of abduction by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). On 7 March, a truck belonging to a national NGO called South Sudan Community Association (SSCA) was ambushed by the LRA along the Yei-Maridi road, near Tore, 43 miles from Yei. During the incident, one SSCA staff member was killed while two others were seriously injured.
