EWARN in humanitarian emergencies

As many as seven countries– Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Syria in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region have established an early warning system for disease outbreaks with a view to early detecting and rapidly investigating any public health event of potential concern. Such a system, in the absence of a routine disease surveillance system, needs continuous monitoring and assessment using a set of performance benchmarks.

OVERVIEW

MIGRANT BASELINE

The 21th round of data collection took place in July and August 2018. During this round a revised version of the data collection methodology was used to capture additional information on the needs and challenges migrants are facing.

DTM identified there to be at least 669,176 migrants in Libya. Migrants were identified in all baladiyas, within 554 communities and originated from more than 41 countries.

Influenza: Burden of disease estimation in Saudi Arabia

On July 2018, the Ministry of Health of Saudi Arabia conducted a three-day workshop on the estimation of the influenza burden using Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) surveillance data. During the workshop, 12 participants from different regions of the country were trained by influenza experts from Infection Hazard Management unit (IHM) of WHO Regional office for Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO).

Cholera situation in Eastern Mediterranean Region 2017

Cholera remains a threat to public health and claims lives in the countries of Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). During 2017, a total of 1,108,584 suspected cases of cholera including 3,273 related deaths (case fatality rate—CFR: 0.30%) were reported to WHO by seven Member States in the EMR.

Upsurge of CCHF cases in Afghanistan

An upsurge in the number of the reported cases of Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) from Afghanistan has been reported during 2018. The increase is mainly in Herat province in the western part of the country. As of week 25-2018, a total of 125 cases including 18 deaths (CFR=14.4%) have been reported countrywide.

Guide for policy makers

This report provides an overview of alternatives to immigration detention in Africa. Drawing from examples in 32 African countries, the report highlights some of the measures in place that contribute to the effective and humane governance of migration, while avoiding the use of unnecessary immigration detention.
African policy makers are facing both internal and external pressure to manage migration more effectively. The research undertaken for this report demonstrates that:
