En un boletín emitido a las once de la mañana de hoy, el COE disminuyó a cinco las provincias bajo alerta.

En lo adelante, se mantiene a Montecristi en amarilla, mientras que San Cristóbal, Peravia, San José de Ocoa y Azua están en verde.

El organismo coordinador de respuesta, recomienda a quienes residen en localidades bajo aviso, seguir los lineamientos de los organismos de protección civil y abstenerse de cruzar ríos arroyos y cañadas que presenten grandes volúmenes de agua.

La Dirección del Centro de Operaciones de Emergencias (COE), informa que de acuerdo al último boletín de la Oficina Nacional de Meteorología “ONAMET”, el cual establece que sobre el país continuamos observando un flujo del sureste y sur/sureste que aun pude considerarse como un efecto indirecto del distante huracán IRMA, dicho viento estará transportando campos nubosos hacia nuestro territorio.

Irma, el huracán más poderoso jamás registrado en el Océano Atlántico, ha causado grandes daños a las islas del Caribe Oriental, siendo las islas de Barbuda y Anguila las más afectadas. Se estima que cerca de 20.000 niños, niñas y adolescentes han sido afectados en estas islas.

New York, 8 September 2017 – The most powerful hurricane ever recorded over the Atlantic Ocean has battered several Caribbean islands, leaving Barbuda and St. Martins near “uninhabitable”, according to national authorities. Hurricane Irma has also left catastrophic damage as it passed over Turks and Caicos, southern Bahamas, northern Dominican Republic and northern Haiti.

Hurricane Irma Update
- Irma caused extensive damage in Barbuda and Anguilla where 70-90% of the buildings were destroyed. WFP is in discussions with OCHA, Resident Coordinators and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) to explore possibilities to support the Islands of the Eastern Caribbean through coordination, IT and transportation support.
- Hurricane Irma has past the Dominican Republic and the northern coast of Haiti resulting in partial flooding in the north-east (Ouanaminthe, Fort-Libertel, Caracol, Ferrier, North Hole).

Christian Aid is assessing flood and wind damage in northern areas of Dominican Republic and Haiti battered by Hurricane Irma on Thursday. Many homes have been left flooded with crops and plantations ruined.

Winds of at least 160mph have damaged roofs and the excessive rain has caused flooding, devastating much of the land near the north coast and destroying infrastructure such as bridges.

Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm, has made its first landfall on the islands of the northeast Caribbean on 6 September. It is significantly strengthening becoming the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic and following a path predicted to hit Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba. Over the next five days, heavy rain, very strong winds and storm surge could affect all of these areas.

  • Around noon, moving at 26 km per hour, Hurricane Irma hit the island 100 km north of Puerto Plata; seven hours later, it had already crossed the Dominican Republic.

  • According to the last Emergency Operations Center (COE) report, there has been no loss of life, and at 18:00 hours, the entire country with the exception of two provinces are on red or yellow alert.
    More than 19,000 people have been evacuated and sheltered, with 8,000 in 91 shelters and 11,000 in houses of friends or relatives.

  • Hurricane IRMA has passed Turks and Caicos, north of the Dominican Republic and Haiti on 8 September. It is currently affecting the northern part of Cuba with strong winds and heavy rain. In some areas power cuts have been reported as well as increasingly difficulties in communication.

  • IRMA will move on towards the Bahamas and expected to make landfall in Florida on Sunday 10 September. It has strengthened again to a category 5 hurricane with maximum wind speed of 296 km/h. Up to six million people were asked to evacuate from Florida as well as parts of Georgia.
