Highlights

Hurricane Irma has put the lives of thousands of children in the Caribbean in danger. Wind, rain and surge waves are causing floods, mudslides and the destruction of homes, schools, health centers and WASH infrastructure, affecting children across the region.

  • After impacting several islands during its path in the Caribbean Sea, Irma was downgraded to Category 3 Saturday morning but was expected to strengthen again over Florida.

Overview

Hurricane IRMA moved across western, north-western counties of Florida and south-western Georgia on 11 September, weakening into a tropical depression. Over the next 48 hours, it is forecast to pass over Alabama and western Tennessee. Heavy rain and strong winds could affect these areas. Media have reported ten deaths across the United States.

11 de septiembre, 2017 — Las oficinas en el Caribe del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD) unieron hoy sus fuerzas para crear una Estrategia Regional de Recuperación en los países afectados por el paso del huracán Irma.

  • Hurricane IRMA continued moving west-northwest reaching the northern coast of Cuba on 9 September morning (UTC) as a Category 5 Hurricane. It passed over Florida Keys on 10 September afternoon (UTC) as a Category 4 Hurricane, over Marco Island and Naples (Florida) in the evening as a Category 3 Hurricane. Then it continued heading north-west moving inland crossing central northern Florida counties weakening.
