13 de septiembre, 2017 — Las islas Anguila, Antigua y Barbuda, San Martín, Vírgenes Británicas y Turcos y Caicos son las más afectadas tras el paso del huracán Irma, de acuerdo con las últimas informaciones de la Oficina de Coordinación de Asuntos Humanitarios de la ONU (OCHA).

En Cuba, el meteoro afectó a 13 de sus 15 provincias, fallecieron 10 personas y causó daños a la agricultura, el abastecimiento de agua y las telecomunicaciones.

More than 1.2 million people have so far been exposed to the effects of Hurricane Irma, the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean. It made landfall on several eastern Caribbean islands on 6 September, sweeping through the region and hitting the US state of Florida on Sunday 10 September. “The number of people directly exposed to the storm is growing every day. It is a catastrophe by any measure,” stated Elhadj As Sy, the Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

Highlights

Hurricane Irma has put the wellbeing of hundreds of thousands of children in the Caribbean in danger. Having caused large scale damage in parts of the Eastern Caribbean, the storm passed by the Dominican Republic and Haiti before slowly moving along the coast of Cuba for over 48 hours, fluctuating between a category 4 and 5 hurricane. With high winds, heavy rain and storm surges it has caused widespread damage to homes, schools, health centres and basic infrastructure across the region.

  • Hurricane IRMA moved across Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee (USA) on 12 September, weakening and dissipating. Heavy rain and strong winds affected several areas along its path.

  • The Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) has been activated for Florida State on 12 September by the US Federal Emergency Management Agency. This brings to five the number of Copernicus activations related to IRMA (France, Netherlands, United Kingdom, European Commission and USA).

WHOLE ISLANDS DEVASTATED

After storming through the Caribbean and leaving a trail of devastation in its wake, Hurricane Irma has finally relented.

Since last Tuesday, Hurricane Irma has wreaked havoc in the Caribbean, flattening homes on St Martin, Barbuda, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba. Florida was the last to see the wrath of this ferocious storm.
