The Logistics Cluster coordinates and facilitates a weekly passenger movement between Djibouti and Aden on the WFP-chartered vessel, VOS Apollo, which is also used for emergency rescue and evacuation purposes. Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM)

  • Within the framework of the Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM), which is under the monitoring and supervision of UNFPA, the Logistics Cluster is in charge of assembling the RRM kits at the three common warehouses in Hodeidah (Bajil), Sana’a and Aden and of dispatching them to implementing partners in field locations; last mile delivery to beneficiaries is carried out by implementing partners.

Operational Updates

• Djibouti is hosting approximately 26,300 refugees from Somalia, Yemen, Eritrea and Ethiopia, of which 21,100 reside in settlements. WFP provides assistance to all registered refugees and asylum seekers living in Ali Addeh, Holl Holl and Markazi camps in form of general distributions, nutrition support and a cash transfer component as part of the general distribution.

ADDIS ABABA - A new accord with the Government of Ethiopia will see the World Food Programme (WFP) develop national capacity in managing the Ethio-Djibouti land corridor and port operations.

The Memorandum of Understanding between WFP and the Ethiopian Maritime Affairs Authority (EMAA) seeks to relieve congestion in the Port of Djibouti and to develop skills and expertise among Government staff.

Situation Update

  • Due to ongoing fighting around Hodeidah and a resulting increase in humanitarian activities targeting Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), the Logistics Cluster has been tasked with coordinating Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) deliveries to Humanitarian Service Points (HSPs) and Transit Points (TPs) which were established as locations to provide IDPs with relief items.

  • 126 rotations with 2,560 passengers transported between Djibouti and Aden on behalf of 42 service users (14 UN agencies, 24 INGOs, 4 NNGOs), for an average rate of use of 43% (maximum capacity 25 passengers per leg/50 per voyage).

  • Thanks to the contributions received by Canada, CERF, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, WFP and the Logistics Cluster will be able to extend the service until the end of 2018.

HIGHLIGHTS

• In response to the cyclone Sagar in May, UNICEF distributed Immediate Response WASH and dignity kits benefitting 700 affected households (including IDPs and surrounding host community) in Damerjog, an IDP site located just outside Djibouti;

• Over the reporting period, 842 people in drought affected areas gained access to adequate sanitation;
