Washington, July 9, 2018 – The World Bank announced today new support for Djibouti’s goal of reversing and ultimately eliminating childhood stunting with a US$15 million credit from IDA, the World Bank’s fund for the poorest countries. This investment in human capital development, will focus on the critical first 1,000 days from pregnancy to age two, before stunting becomes largely irreversible.

Background

In early 2017, UNHCR launched the Dangerous Crossings campaign to spread awareness among the tens of thousands of refugees and migrants who risk their lives crossing the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea from the Horn of Africa to war-stricken Yemen.

With the help of prominent musicians from Ethiopia, Somalia, and Egypt, UNHCR produced the Dangerous Crossings song to help raise awareness and break the business model of people trafficking and smuggling.

Highlights

Most MENA countries have high immunization coverage rates. But immunization coverage has dropped considerably in some (including Iraq, the Syrian Arab Republic and Yemen), due to the conflicts, instability and the prevailing geopolitical situation in the region. Approximately 1.3 million surviving infants in MENA missed their third dose of DTP vaccine in 2016. In many of the region’s countries, problems of equity persist, particularly concerning displaced populations, nomads, ethnic groups and marginalized urban populations.

• 111 rotations with 2,493 passengers transported between Djibouti and Aden on behalf of 41 service users (14 UN agencies, 23 INGOs, 4 NNGOs), for an average use rate of 45% (maximum capacity 25 passengers per leg/50 per voyage).

• Thanks to the contributions received by Canada, ECHO, Germany, CERF and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, WFP and the Logistics Cluster will be able to extend the service until the end of 2018.

Le suivi des flux de population est une activité qui consiste à collecter des données dans les localités où transitent les migrants.

Cette activité a débuté en Mai 2017 dans 6 localités et a continué de grandir jusqu’à aujourd’hui avec 13 points situés dans les régions d’Arta, Ali-Sabieh, Dikhil, Tadjourah et Obock.

Updates on achievements

UNHCR together with governmental counterparts and partners assist and coordinate repatriation of Somali refugees. Since the beginning of the voluntary return programme in December 2014, 81,677 Somali refugees were supported to repatriate from eight countries of asylum (4,940 this year). Each Somali family receive the enhanced return package that supports returnees in restarting their lives and restoring their livelihoods after return.
