WASHINGTON — The Horn of Africa continued to resolve diplomatic impasses with the announcement Friday that Eritrea and Djibouti will normalize relations. Leaders in the region, and beyond, are celebrating the development, which promises to end a decade-long dispute and follows renewed diplomatic ties between Eritrea and both Ethiopia and Somalia in July.

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres:

The Secretary-General welcomes the visit to Djibouti on 6 September by the Ministers for Horn of Africa of Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia, joining Djibouti's Foreign Minister, as another important step in the rapprochement among the countries in the Horn of Africa region. The agreement reached among the four Ministers to work together to restore peace and stability in the region is a positive example for the Horn and beyond.

SITUATION. Une reproduction a petite echelle a eu lieu dans le centre de I'Algerie, cependant que des ailes Oars etaient presents dans le sud-est de la Mauritanie et rest du Tchad.

PREVISIONS. Une reproduction a petite echelle entrainera une legere augmentation des effectifs acridiens dans le Sahel septentrional de Mauritanie, du Mali, du Niger, du Tchad et du sud de I'Algerie. On ne s'attend a aucun developpement significatif.

Like in many parts of the globe, migration continues to dominate debates in our region. On 6 August, IOM and its partners, launched a Regional Migrant Response Plan for the Horn of Africa and Yemen appealing to the international community for USD 45 million. L'OIM travaille en collaboration avec le Gouvernement afin de mieux appréhender les dynamiques migratoires à Djibouti et comprendre le profil des migrants qui transitent dans le pays. Pour ce faire, l’OIM met en œuvre le suivi des flux de population, activité qui consiste à collecter des données dans les localités par lesquelles transitent les migrants. Cette activité a débuté en mai 2017 dans 6 localités et n'a cessé de grandir, jusqu'à atteindre 12 points de suivi actuellement, situés dans les régions d’Arta, Ali-Sabieh, Dikhil, Tadjourah et Obock.
