Situation Update

  • Due to ongoing fighting around Hodeidah and a resulting increase in humanitarian activities targeting Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), the Logistics Cluster has been tasked with coordinating Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) deliveries to Humanitarian Service Points (HSPs) and Transit Points (TPs) which were established as locations to provide IDPs with relief items.

Global strategy to Eliminate Yellow fever Epidemics (EYE)

On 10 April 2018, WHO and partners launched the Global Strategy to Eliminate Yellow fever Epidemics (EYE). At a meeting in Abuja Nigeria, WHO, UNICEF, Gavi and health officials across the African continent re-affirmed their commitment to eliminate Yellow fever.

SITUATION. Une reproduction a petite echelle a eu lieu dans le centre de I'Algerie, cependant que des ailes Oars etaient presents dans le sud-est de la Mauritanie et rest du Tchad.

PREVISIONS. Une reproduction a petite echelle entrainera une legere augmentation des effectifs acridiens dans le Sahel septentrional de Mauritanie, du Mali, du Niger, du Tchad et du sud de I'Algerie. On ne s'attend a aucun developpement significatif.

Welcome to the August edition of the UN Migration Agency Bulletin for the East and Horn of Africa.
Like in many parts of the globe, migration continues to dominate debates in our region. On 6 August, IOM and its partners, launched a Regional Migrant Response Plan for the Horn of Africa and Yemen appealing to the international community for USD 45 million. It is the first of such plan to be launched ever.

Welcome to the July edition of the UN Migration Agency Bulletin for the East and Horn of Africa.
Our region has much to celebrate after the historic breakthrough in Ethiopia and Eritrea relations. The signing of a Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship by the leaders of the two countries, and the subsequent restoration of air services and phone links, we hope, will lead to the free movement of people across their borders.

HIGHLIGHTS

• In response to the cyclone Sagar in May, UNICEF distributed Immediate Response WASH and dignity kits benefitting 700 affected households (including IDPs and surrounding host community) in Damerjog, an IDP site located just outside Djibouti;

• Over the reporting period, 842 people in drought affected areas gained access to adequate sanitation;

Updates on achievements

Over 819,000 Somalis are living outside their county as asylum-seekers and refugees. The majority (767,500) live in neighbouring countries of Ethiopia (256,000), Kenya (255,500) and Yemen (256,000). UNHCR strives to find durable solutions for Somali refugees to enable them to rebuild their lives either in the country of asylum, resettle to a third country or by supporting voluntary return. So far, UNHCR has assisted 83,669 refugees to return to Somalia in safety and dignity from nine different countries of asylum.

Updates on achievements

UNHCR together with governmental counterparts and partners assist and coordinate repatriation of Somali refugees. Since the beginning of the voluntary return programme in December 2014, 81,677 Somali refugees were supported to repatriate from eight countries of asylum (4,940 this year). Each Somali family receive the enhanced return package that supports returnees in restarting their lives and restoring their livelihoods after return.
