The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) monitors trends in staple food prices in countries vulnerable to food insecurity. For each FEWS NET country and region, the Price Bulletin provides a set of charts showing monthly prices in the current marketing year in selected urban centers and allowing users to compare current trends with both five-year average prices, indicative of seasonal trends, and prices in the previous year.

A record number of arrivals in Yemen

With one more month until the end of the year and despite the ongoing war in Yemen, a record number of migrants and asylum seekers from the Horn of Africa have arrived in Yemen in 2016. Never, since monthly monitoring of migrant arrivals started in 2006, have so many migrants arrived in Yemen in one year.

Executive summary

The escalation of fighting between opposition groups in Yemen from 26th March, 2015 affected close to 2 million people as at August 2015. 1,439,118 persons were internally displaced and 100,661 left Yemen to seek refuge in Djibouti, Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Oman and Saudi Arabia (UNHCR). Djibouti continued to receive the majority of refugees and was one of the rare neighbouring countries that had opened its borders to those fleeing Yemen.

Hunger is not inevitable As 2016 comes to an end, almost 130-million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. Throughout the year, natural hazards, conflict and protracted crises have placed a particularly heavy burden on the poor, who are often extremely vulnerable to shocks. Across 22-affected areas, 70-million people are currently in Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Phase 3 or above.

Switzerland - IOM is reporting today (16/12) 7,189 migrants and refugees have died or remain missing on world migratory routes. This is the highest yearly number IOM has ever recorded, and represents an average of 20 deaths per day, suggesting the deaths of another 200-300 men, women and children well may be recorded worldwide before 2016 comes to an end.

Drought is widespread across Somalia warn ACTED teams in the country. In Puntland, severe drought has directly affected up to 150,000 people and has displaced an additional 12,000 people, according to the consortium. In parts of Somaliland, the average distance to water points has risen to 50 kilometres, while some communities are traveling as far as 125 kilometres, making water consumption drop below 3 litres per person per day. Overall, more than 320,000 children are acutely malnourished and need urgent nutrition support.

Projected lean season months highlighted in red indicate either an early start or an extension to the typical lean season.
