In recent years, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has seen changes in its migration processes with an intensification of flows towards traditional destinations as well as new destinations in the region and the world. This report presents information available as of September 2018.

In the first quarter of 2018, our teams brought together more than 100 health care professionals for an emergency room trauma course aimed at increasing the chances of survival for patients at risk in hospitals. Medical supplies were also provided, some of which were used for treating wounds in public and military hospitals, for example.

Over 500 patients were assisted in the first quarter of 2018, including victims of urban violence and emergency cases.

The number of Venezuelans seeking asylum has risen yearly since 2014. Between 2014 and 2018, some 170,169 asylum claims have been lodged, over 94,000 in 2017 alone and 4,225 recognized as refugees

The majority of Venezuelans who have left their country have no regular status, and are therefore more vulnerable to any form of exploitation, abuse, violence, trafficking and discrimination.

Thousands continue to legally enter daily in neighbouring countries. It is expected that people will continue to leave in 2018. UNHCR is stepping up its response accordingly.

The economic crisis in Venezuela has led to a deterioration of the humanitarian conditions and increased humanitarian needs. Import restrictions and hyperinflation reduce availability and access to basic goods and services. The economic crisis is exacerbated by a political crisis revolving around the erosion of democratic institutions. While the number of people in need in Venezuela and the severity of need is unclear due to lack of data, surveys conducted by local organisations point to an increasingly dire situation.

Buenos Aires – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, today (10/04) launches a Regional Action Plan, detailing its support to Governments hosting Venezuelan nationals in the Americas and the Caribbean. The Action Plan aims at strengthening the regional response to large-scale flows of Venezuelans, supporting the efforts that governments have initiated across the region.

The Special Commission for Refugees (CEPR) reported that approx. 700 applications are received on a daily basis in Peru. 180,000 Venezuelans have crossed into Ecuador in the first three months of 2018, compared to 230,000 in all of 2017.

UNHCR, the Brazilian Government opened a new shelter in Boa Vista. 594 people who were living on the streets were relocated.

Venezuelans arriving recently have stronger humanitarian needs and less financial resources to cover them, and are therefore more vulnerable and in need of assistance.

Colombia, Brazil and Guyana announced new measures to address the arrivals of Venezuelans, as border areas are increasingly overstretched.

El Plan de Acción tiene por finalidad fortalecer la respuesta regional a flujos en gran escala de venezolanos, dando su apoyo a los esfuerzos que los gobiernos han puesto en marcha en toda la región.

Thousands of Venezuelans are crossing the borders daily into neighbouring countries in search of safety. Displaced by scarcity of food and medicines, but also because of violence and persecution, the growing numbers of Venezuelans fleeing their country are putting massive pressure on the region.
Over 4 million Venezuelans have fled to find safety in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Aruba, Curacao and Spain over the past 4 years. Neighbouring countries are overwhelmed and overstretched by the influx of Venezuelans.

In Colombia a growing number of Venezuelans are arriving with increasing humanitarian needs and less means than those who arrived in earlier months.

The Human Rights’ Commission in Brazil reported alarming conditions in two Roraima shelters and asked to prioritize people with specific needs.

During the second half of January there was an average of 1,000 Venezuelans crossing via Tumbes into Peru on a daily basis.

09 Feb 2018 description

Venezuelans continue to leave their homes and cross into neighbouring countries. Many are in need of protection, shelter, food and medicine.

Based on official migration movement figures, UNHCR estimates that there could be as many as 93,000 Venezuelans currently in Ecuador.

In Brazil over 15,600 Venezuelans have lodged asylum claims in 2017 and 1,680 Temporary Residence Permits have been granted in 2017 according to Government figures.

But further investments are needed to reduce the risks from hazards like tropical cyclones, floods and drought.

The number of Venezuelans seeking asylum has increased yearly since 2014. Between 2014 2017, around 99,000 asylum claims were lodged, half of which in 2017 alone (as of September).

The primary receiving countries of Venezuelan asylum seekers in the region between 2014 and 2017 have been: USA: 46,000, Brazil: 16,500, Peru: 9,500; Costa Rica: 3,300 and Panama: 3,000.

Considering the evolving situation in Venezuela, it is projected that people will continue to leave the country over the coming months. UNHCR is stepping up its response accordingly.
