  • The Provincial Defense Council of Havana called for a general mobilization in order to collect more than 1.5 million cubic meters of solid waste that still obstruct the streets of the Cuban capital. An ecological landfill has been established to receive all the trees that were downed by Hurricane Irma in the city.

Un número significativo de comunidades en la parte este, centro y oeste de la isla han sido gravemente afectadas. La falta de electricidad y el acceso al agua potable son los principales problemas. Highlights

The aftermath of Hurricane Irma is putting the well-being of hundreds of thousands of children in the Caribbean in danger. The extent of the devastation to Cuba and islands in the Eastern Caribbean is beginning to become clearer as rapid assessments are underway. With high winds, heavy rain and storm surges, Irma caused widespread damage to homes, schools, health centers and basic infrastructure across the region.

  • Hurricane Irma put 2.4 million children at risk; of these 271,000 were directly affected.

Hurricane Irma hit the shores of Cuba on September 7, a category 5 storm with sustained winds of 295kph. For four days, Irma battered the north coast of Cuba. 2,000,000 people fled to shelters, churches, or the homes of relatives and neighbours. 9 metre waves swept inland, contaminating fresh water sources, destroying crops, homes and businesses. Coastal dunes, forests, fruit trees, granaries, health centres, schools, markets, bridges and roads were all heavily damaged or destroyed. Power and communications went down and remain down in many communities. 10 people lost their lives.

A significant number of communities in the eastern, central and western parts of the island have been severely affected. Lack of electricity and access to potable water are the major problems. Water is currently being supplied to the population via tanker trucks, and in some areas generators have been connected to facilitate the operation of pumping equipment and the extraction of water from wells. In some communities, food processing centers have been established, which are supplied free of charge at evacuation centers and distributed to the population at subsidized prices.

• Shortage of food and potable water in Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands and Turks and Caicos - some of the most affected by Hurricane Irma continues to be of concern.

• A Regional Response Plan (RRP) to raise US$ 27 million to address the urgent needs of the most vulnerable people affected by Hurricane Irma was launched on 15 September.

• Severely limited communications are hampering the coordination of relief supplies in Turks and Caicos and increasing anxiety among people.

The Category 5 hurricane wrought havoc on many of the Caribbean islands, with maximum sustained winds of 296 km/h bringing heavy rains and causing deadly waves. Those winds lasted for 37 hours, making Irma the longest-lived storm of that intensity anywhere in the world for at least the past 50 years, according to the United Kingdom Met Office.
