This week in New York I expressed Australia’s condolences to Caribbean Foreign Ministers for the loss of life and destruction caused by hurricanes Irma and Maria. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with all people affected by the devastation.

The storms’ deadly and destructive impact has been felt in Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Cuba, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Mexico, Puerto Rico, St Martin and the Turks and Caicos.

  • In Dominica, 100% of the country has been impacted by Hurricane Maria. There are 15 confirmed deaths and 16 persons missing. Power and water supplies have been disrupted and it is estimated that damage to housing is at 90%. The first preliminary assessment on agriculture sector is 100% of losses. Priorities in the country are oriented towards airlift and food as well as shelters. Curfew has been established from 4 PM to 8 AM daily due to security issues.

La aeronave, que partió desde el Ala de Combate número 23 de Manta, traslada paquetes de comida, vestimenta y materiales para dormir como cobijas, sábanas, almohadas y colchones.

New York, 22 September - Governments in several Caribbean countries are starting to rebuild infrastructures, houses and communities with UNDP’s on the ground support after Hurricane Irma left catastrophic damage in several countries.

After experiencing a few days of delay due to the passage of Hurricane Maria, the Government of Barbuda kicked off debris removal efforts on 21 September, with technical support from UNDP to build back better, as part of a UN-wide humanitarian-development strategy.

Due to Irma, 5.6 million people are affected, 10 people dead, around 215 000 homes severely affected. 3.1 million people are without access to water, 75 000 hectares of agricultural land and 70% of health facilities in affected territories are damaged, as well as 2 180 schools out of which 500 in Havana. The number of public health institutions affected by the hurricane has risen to 1 026.
