WASHINGTON, January 26, 1999 -- More than 1,000 Colombian Red Cross relief workers are working around-the-clock rescuing those buried by landslides after a tremendous magnitude 6 earthquake Monday razed cities and towns in western Colombia. Colombian Red Cross workers are also distributing emergency relief and supporting first aid, evacuation and sheltering efforts. The earthquake that errupted 20 miles beneath the earth's surface rocked Colombia's coffee region. The Colombian Red Cross is assessing the widespread damage and responding throughout the region.

An earthquake in western Colombia has killed at least one thousand people and injured scores of others as it toppled buildings and flattened neighborhoods in the South American country's Andes mountains.

The early afternoon quake measured six on the Richter scale with it's epicentre 225 kilometres west of the capital, Bogota.

The deputy fire chief of the provincial city of Armenia says rescue workers were so overwhelmed, that many bodies remained on the street uncollected.

He said perhaps more than two-thousand were dead in Armenia alone.
