On October 29, the second round of presidential elections took place in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. According to Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) data, incumbent President Joseph Kabila received 58 percent of the votes cast. His opponent, Vice President Jean-Pierre Bemba, who challenged the results of a preliminary vote count, was supported by 42 percent of the electorate.
