On Friday 12th January, 2018, 350 youth refugee students from 4 refugee camps (Gihembe, Nyabiheke, Kiziba and Kigeme) graduated from Gitwe Adventist College located in Ruhango District after 45 days of training and vocational and Education training (TVET).

All graduands trained by ADRA Rwanda and IMPACT HOPE are Congolese youth refugees. They were trained on different trades: 146 trained on hair dressing, 58 on Electricity installation and domestic maintenance, 86 on Tailoring, 35 trained on Plumbing and 24 trained on Permaculture.

Under the Sustainable Return and Reintegration Project of MIDIMAR, 75 houses were provided to most vulnerable Rwandan returnees. NDAGIJIMANA Jean Baptiste, 52, married to UWIMANA Alivera, 35, with 3 children is the beneficiary who received one of those houses.

The Minister of MIDIMAR, Hon. De Bonheur Jeanne d’Arc together with the UNHCR Representative to Rwanda, Mr. Ahmed Baba Fall and other implementing partners visited Kiziba Congolese refugees’ camp on 29th September, 2017 to assess the living conditions of refugees in Kizaba camp.

Visiting Kiziba Refugee camp, oldest camp in Rwanda and a home to 17,166 Congolese, Hon. De Bonheur Jeanne d’Arc stopped at different facilities available in the camp. She visited the water supplying facilities, health posts and classrooms used by students of different levels among others.

On September 15, 2017 - The Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugees (MIDIMAR) in partnership with UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) have launched the use of cooking gas in Nyarushishi transit centre, in Rusizi District, to improve health and reduce environmental damage caused by the excessive use of firewood.

The new gas program was launched by Hon. Mme De Bonheur Jeanne d’Arc and the UNHCR Head of Field Office, Mr. Ben Boubacar Diallo, .

This Wednesday 19 April 2017 - Two hundred seventy one Rwandan returnees from the Democratic Republic of Congo have been received in Kijote Transit Center located in the Kijote village of Bigogwe Sector, Nyabihu district. The center is in charge of receiving Rwandan returnees while waiting to be reintegrated into the community.

From 16-19 August 2016, officials from the Ministry of Disaster Management and refugee affairs (MIDIMAR), with partners conducted a tour in different District of the country to handover accommodations houses to 25 families of Rwandans who have returned from exile during different years back.

The beneficiaries included seven in Bugesera District, 10 in Nymasheke District, six in Rusizi and two in Nyamagabe District.

Tuesday August 02, 2016 was one of the happiest days for 34 refugee students who completed university studies in this academic year.

The students, from various refugee camps hosting Congolese refugees who graduated in the fields were beneficiaries of the Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Programme (DAFI) in partnership with ADRA Rwanda.

The graduates and their parents expressed gratitude to the Government of Rwanda for having created an environment that allow refugees to have access to education at all levels.

Thirteen former members of the M23 rebels opted for voluntarily repatriation to their home in DR Congo after the visit of Congolese deputy defense minister, René Sibu Matubuka, on Thursday April 23, 2015.

The group is part of the 150 who have been granted amnesty among others camped in Ngoma District.

They decided to return after Matubuka assured them of their security back home.

The US Ambassador to Rwanda, Erica Barks-Ruggles, has pledged her government’s support to ensure peace returns to eastern DR Congo so that refugees can return home.

Amb. Barks-Ruggles made the pledge to thousands of Congolese refugees as she visited them in Gihembe Refugee Camp located in Gicumbi District on Tuesday February 17, 2015.

“We will work closely with partners such as the ICGLR [International Conference on the Great Lakes Region] and others to see how peace can be restored in the DR Congo so that you can repatriate.” Said Ambassador Barks Ruggles.

A year, after his repatriation, Singirankabo enjoys life on the mother land, in spite of several challenges he is still facing to cater for the needs of such a gigantic family. He earns his living from cultivating to neighbors.

The government of Rwanda and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has engaged efforts for joint interventions to curb gender-based violence in refugee camps.

In order to achieve the above commitment, a process to establish one-stop centres in all refugee camps has been started.

So far, one-stop centres were inaugurated in Kigeme refugee camp in Nyamagabe District and Mugombwa camp in Gisagara District.

The facilities established at those camps will not only serve refugees but also their host communities.

The Ministry for Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (MIDIMAR) launched the “1,000-Days in the Thousands Hills” nutrition campaign in refugee camps. The official launch was held in Kiziba camp in Karongi District in the Western province.

The introduction of nutrition campaign in refugee camps is in accordance with the community based integrated approach introduced by MIDIMAR for all services involved in refugee affairs.

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) on Monday May 26, 2014 donated three vehicles to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (MIDIMAR) Rwanda National Police (RNP),) and Immigration Services to support the three institutions in assistance and rescue missions for refugees.

The vehicles, Toyota 4WD-type were handed over to Minister Séraphine Mukantabana of Midmar and DIGP Stanley Nsabimana by Niemah Warsame, UNHCR country Representative at a function held in at MIDIMAR headquarters. Each vehicle is worth $52,000 (about Rwf35.3 million).

On Wednesday February 18, 2013, The Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee affair (MIDIMAR) opened a new camp for Congolese refugees, in the Southern Province in Gisagara District, Mugombwa Sector.

The new Mugombwa Refugee camp is set to accommodate about 10,000 Congolese refugees who have been hosted at Nkamira Transit Center in Rubavu District since 2012.

The relocation of refugees from Nkamira Transit Center commenced on Monday 16, February, 2014 and the operation continues until the whole population transferred to the new camp.
