Opening Remarks

Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.

I have just returned from Eastern Sudan which, as you know, is the centre of one of the longest standing refugee situations in Africa. The East epitomizes this country's long history of hosting refugees. It is a tribute to both the Government of Sudan and the people of the Eastern region, who share land and natural resources with refugees who have nowhere else to go.

I visited Wad Sharifey, Shagarab and Kilo 26 refugee camps.

I thank you for making the time to come to this briefing, and I thank my colleagues at UNMIS for all the good work of organizing it.

I arrived in Sudan one month ago and have had the opportunity-over the past few weeks-to visit UNHCR operations in the East, in Darfur and in Southern Sudan.

  • ADRA-IOM tracking and monitoring of spontaneous returns captured a total of 2,258 individuals this week at major transit hubs in Kosti, Malakal and Juba. Also, state government in Warrab facilitated the return of 400 conflict-displaced households back to their now secure homes.

    - UNHCR meanwhile reported the return of an additional 781 refugees during the eighteenth week of the year, bringing the total for organized and assisted repatriation to 23,523 since the beginning of the year.

(12 February 2009, Juba) Following the latest wave of LRA attacks on the town of Aba in the DRC, some 7,000 refugees have crossed into Lasu (West of Yei) in Southern Sudan this week joining the 10,000 that had earlier moved into Central and Western Equatoria since the crisis began last year, according to the UNHCR.

The attacks have also led to the displacement of some 28,929 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in ten counties in Southern Sudan, according to figures released by UNOCHA in Southern Sudan.
