The DRC government, the UN, national and international NGOs, health workers, local leaders and community members have prevented Ebola getting out of control in Beni, North Kivu, despite the complex context. However, major challenges remain. In the last week of September, almost all response activities were stopped after an armed group attacked Beni, and civil society called for a general strike or ‘ville mort’ in the town. The virus continues to emerge in new areas, including insecure ones, and amongst people who were not previously known to have been in contact with victims.

• The 2017-18 rainfall season was characterized by a late start, an extended mid-season dry spell (December-January) and heavy rains from February into April. The dry spell caused moisture stress and wilting of the early planted crops in many areas in Botswana, south-western Madagascar, southern Malawi, southern and some central parts of Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

On 1 August 2018, the DRC Ministry of Health declared a new Ebola epidemic in Beni territory, North Kivu, in north-eastern DRC. As of 6th August, there were 43 cases, of which 16 have been confirmed, and 34 deaths, across 7 health zones, one of which borders Uganda.1 Never before has Ebola struck in an area of chronic insecurity and humanitarian crisis. The challenge for DRC and its international partners is not only to rapidly control deadly Ebola, but to do so in a way that contributes to protecting communities in this vulnerable environment.

Oxfam provides desperately needed food in DR Congo's Ebola outbreak

Oxfam has started to provide desperately needed food to thousands of people caught up in the Ebola outbreak in Equateur province.

Oxfam is distributing rice, beans and flour, to about 4,525 people. It has already started in Mbandaka - the provincial capital - and plans to extend to rural communities. This is in addition providing clean water and working with communities to ensure they know how to protect themselves against the virus and prevent its spread.
