Kinshasa, 13 October 2017 – UN-Habitat in close collaboration the Ministry of Land Affairs through the National Commission on land reform (CONAREF) recently organised a national workshop in Kinshasa on the “elaboration of provincial strategies for improving land governance in the Democratic Republic of Congo”.

The two-day national consultative workshop is one out the outputs of the Community Participatory Land Use Planning project implemented by UN-Habitat in three provinces of the Republic of Congo, namely North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri.

Kalobeiyei, Kenya 20 July 2017—Song and dance marked the ceremony where trainees of a Japanese technology were issued with certificates at Kalobeiyei Settlement in Kenya’s Turkana County.

Awarding the certificates to the graduates – which was a mixture of the host community and refugees- First Secretary at the Japan Embassy in Nairobi Mr. Ito Yo challenged them to put into practice what they had learnt to earn themselves a decent living.

Kalobeiyei, 18 July 2017 – Renowned Japanese architect, Shigeru Ban, has signed an agreement with UN-Habitat to design as many as 12,000 new homes in the Kalobeiyei refugee settlement site in Northern Kenya.

Signing the agreement on site in Northern Kenya, Ban explained that the most important thing was to ensure that the design was sustainable.

Nairobi, 10 July 2017 – Renowned architect, Shigeru Ban, will visit the Kalobeiyei refugee settlement site in Northern Kenya this week as part of a newly-established partnership with UN-Habitat.

Under a partnership with VAN, the Voluntary Architects Network, Mr Ban will develop potential shelter designs for residents of the camp based on socio-economic needs and available data from UN-Habitat. The two organizations will also conduct participatory design workshops with the community, and develop 20 shelter design models.

The year 2015 marked the 10th anniversary of the Global Shelter Cluster, the inter-agency coordination mechanism for shelter response. During these ten years, coordination has improved in consistency, shelter responses have grown in scale, and there are more people with experience in shelter programming, but people continue to lose their dwellings and be displaced due to conflict and natural disasters. Global humanitarian shelter needs continue to greatly exceed the capacity and resources to respond.

UN-Habitat's land reform programme in the Democratic Republic of Congo has received a major shot in the arm following two additional fundings.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) recently signed a grant agreement with UN-Habitat to expand the implementation of a land program in DR Congo through to 2014. The grant totaling USD 2.5 million will be channeled towards tackling land disputes in Eastern DR Congo as part of the land reform efforts already in progress.

The land reform process in the Democratic Republic of Congo was officially launched last week by the Vice Prime Minister, Mr Daniel Mukoko Samba. Speaking during a national land consultation workshop where the launch took place, the Vice Prime Minister confirmed the government's commitment to ease land-related tensions so as to promote an enabling environment for economic and social development.

Following the outdated 1973 land law, DR Congo has been plagued with issues in its land governance system resulting in land disputes.

UN-Habitat last week donated to the Congolese government in North Kivu Province state-of-the-art land equipment worth USD 80,000. The equipment is expected to enable the local land administration to improve their capacity in addressing land tenure and security challenges and to further assist the locals in protecting land rights and recovering rightful ownership to land in post-conflict Congo.

Goma, 7 Jul 09 - The Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), UNHCR and UN-HABITAT last week organised a conference to discuss the issue of land, housing and property for returning refugees and internally displaced persons.
