As World Press Freedom Day takes place in Ghana May 3, Internews Regional Director for Africa addresses the challenges to media freedom facing the continent

It’s difficult to talk about freedom of the media in Africa today, without talking about the worrying events happening in East Africa, particularly in Kenya and Tanzania. Restrictions of and challenges to the media in these countries illustrate current declines in media freedom at the regional level, and reveal a level of hostility toward the media and contraction of civic space openly encouraged by leaders.

In 2011 and 2012, USIP held a Priority Grant Competition entitled “Communication for Peacebuilding” to support research and practitioner projects on the ways that communication flows and communication technologies can contribute to the prevention and resolution of conflict. Internews, a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening independent media worldwide, received funding in 2011 for a grant project in the Central African Republic and also agreed to serve as the lead ‘learning organization’ for the group of three 2011 grantees.

(December 1, 2011) Results of the presidential election in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are expected Monday, the sixth of December, and the country waits with bated breath. Many fear street protests and armed clashes may greet whatever result is announced. The November 28th elections, only the second in forty years, have been logistically flawed, with numerous cases of alleged fraud and polling center violence. At least eight people were reported killed in the violence.

(February 14, 2011) In a country beset by internal strife, conflict and underdevelopment, the media in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) face challenges of their own: restrictive media laws, intimidation of journalists and the fragile infrastructure of fledgling independent and community radio stations.

Against this backdrop, Internews has just begun implementing a 5-year project to support the growth and sustainability of dozens of community radio stations across four provinces in this vast country.

The 5th Annual Rwanda Film Festival (June 12-28) screened four documentary films made by Internews as part of a peace-building project that has reached thousands of people in Rwanda and the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Under the project, Internews Europe worked with local journalists to produce 12 documentaries, filmed in both countries, that tell stories of everyday life - music, sport, village events - to familiarize communities on both sides of the conflict-affected border with each other and show how they can live together in peace.
