Description of the disaster

On Tuesday, 24 July 2018, DRC’s Minister of Public Health, Oly Ilunga, declared the end of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak that had been plaguing the Equateur Province since May. No new confirmed case of EVD has been reported in this province in the 21 days of monitoring since the last case was found out. Indeed, the last confirmed Ebola patient had been recorded on 6 June and left the Bikoro Treatment Center in the DRC on 12 June 2018.

Kinshasa/Nairobi/Geneva, 29 August 2018: The response to the current Ebola outbreak is being further complicated by the triple threat of conflict, community resistance and a rising number of infections and deaths, says the Red Cross.

According to the latest report of the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), 75 people have died and there are now 112 suspected Ebola cases. Last week, an Ebola case was confirmed in Oicha health zone which is difficult to access due to conflict.

At the scene of a tragedy in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a team of Red Cross volunteers faced a very sensitive dilemma. A resident of a remote village in the north of the country had died from Ebola. The family had been patiently and respectfully talked out of doing the traditional burial practices that have proved so deadly during previous outbreaks. They agreed to allow a safe and dignified burial by the Red Cross team. But there was a problem.

Description of the disaster

On 08 May, 2018, the Ministry of Health (MoH) officially declared the 9th outbreak of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) in DRC in the Equateur province. Since then, 54 EVD cases have been registered, including 38 confirmed cases. Seventeen (17) persons died from this epidemic including 2 health personnel. 21 people survived from the virus.
The 9th epidemic has been declared over on 25 July, as no new cases were detected from the 6th of June 2018.

Kinshasa/Nairobi/Geneva, 2 August – The response to the presumptive positive outbreak of Ebola in north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) will be “highly complex”, according to a senior public health expert at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

The DRC Ministry of Health reported that four samples from patients in the health area of Mangina in North Kivu province tested positive for Ebola. These results still require full confirmatory testing in the capital, Kinshasa.

Fears are growing that Democratic Republic of the Congo is experiencing its 10th outbreak of Ebola only days after the country’s health ministry announced the end of an outbreak in Equateur province.

The Ministry of Health has reported that four samples from patients suffering from fever in the health area of Mangina, in North Kivu, have tested positive for Ebola Virus Disease. More than 20 people are suffering from fever in this area and further tests are being carried out in the capital Kinshasa to confirm the outbreak.

Kinshasa/Nairobi/Geneva, 23 July 2018 – Tomorrow (24 July) will mark 42 days since the last patient with Ebola was identified in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

If no other cases of the Ebola virus disease are identified, the DRC Ministry of Health will announce the official end of the outbreak on Wednesday 25 July.
