Health officials have stepped up surveillance against the deadly disease which has claimed over 100 people in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

A health surveillance team has been deployed at Uganda’s border points with Congo since the outbreak started about two months ago. Uganda has had no Ebola outbreak since 2012.

Dr Henry Mwebesa, the director general of health services said the health taskforce had so far screened 220 suspected cases of Ebola but none has tested positive for Ebola.

Leaders in Kabarole have agreed to construct an Ebola isolation unit in Bukwali near Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital.

Addressing the press last week, Stephen Asiimwe, the Resident District Commissioner for Kabarole and chairman Ebola task force, said the isolation centre will serve all the districts in the Rwenzori region.

The Japanese government is providing US$21.2m (about Sh55.3b) to four UN agencies to support refugee programmes in south-western Uganda plus climate related, health, nutrition, water and sanitation challenges in Karamoja.

The announcement was made by the Japanese Ambassador to Uganda, Kazuo Minagawa at a press conference at the Uganda media Centre in Kampala.

Uganda needs assistance to support the Congolese refugees who have fled conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, international affairs state minister Henry Okello Oryem has said.

“We need support to reduce on the pressure that they are putting on the facilities and social services in Uganda. We have so far received over 114,000 refugees,” said Oryem.

He expressed concern that the armed conflict in eastern Congo may lead to violation of territorial integrity, abuse of women and children’s rights as well as use of child soldiers.

The Ministry of Health will send health experts to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to help them combat an outbreak of the deadly Ebola haemorrhagic fever there.

The ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr. Asuman Lukwago, said this was intended to prevent the disease from spilling over into Uganda, which is emerging from another Ebola epidemic.

By yesterday, reports indicated that one person had died of Ebola and three others were infected in northeastern Congo.

A cholera out break has been reported at Karambo near Bunagana border post and Busanza border line at Uganda's border with DR Congo, Kisoro District Health Officer Dr. Steven Nsabiyunva has said.

The outbreak comes at the peak of the influx of refugees from DR Congo to Uganda. Speaking to the New Vision at his office on Friday, Dr Nsabiyunva said the district health team was considering making a quarantine to protect refugees already at Nayakabande refugee reception center and the district population at large.

A total of 300,000 small arms and light weapons have been smuggled into Uganda and other East African community countries for the last 10 years.

This is as revealed by the executive secretary East Africa Action Network on small arms (EAANSA), Richard Mugisha has revealed.

Mugisha said the importation of illegal small arms was high in East Africa due to the existing arms embargoes which are too easy to break or ignore by different countries.

UGANDA'S military offensive against the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels and their leader, Joseph Kony, has been extended to the Central Africa Republic (CAR).

The Ministry of Defence said yesterday the Ugandan forces were pursuing the rebels in the jungles of CAR. The rebels have abducted, maimed and killed thousands of people in the region.

"The offensive is going on. The Central Africa Republic authorised us to pursue the LRA in its territory. Our boys are there and are doing the job," the army spokesman, Lt. Col.

Over 1300 DR Congo refugees in Nakivale resettlement camp in Mbarara have received relief items worth US$17,000 (about sh30m), under the Church of Uganda development and rehabilitation programme.

Items distributed included blankets, buckets, clothes, soap and construction of shelter for vulnerable groups in Rubondo.

Maria Kamuhangire, the Church's officer in charge of refugees, officiating at the function, said the refugees who crossed into Uganda through Rucuru were escaping from clashes between the DRC government forces and rebel groups.
