• On August 1, 2017, the UNICEF Executive Director activated the Level 3 Corporate Emergency Response for the Kasai region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for a period of 6 months.

• In 2017 there have been 23,959 suspected cases of cholera and 528 deaths (fatality rate: 2.2%) recorded. The year 2017 is expected to be one of the worst year of the last ten years in term of cholera cases as the limit of 1,800 cases/week was already passed during the reporting period.

National Commission for Refugees and UNHCR estimated that around 64,000 new asylum seekers arrived between mid-May and August, while local authorities reported tens of thousands more arrivals in areas of difficult access. This new influx started mid-May and was triggered by violence, tensions and fear about imminent attacks in border areas.

  • As of 31st August, there were 40,047 Burundian refugees and asylum seekers who arrived since April 2015. Refugee status determination by the National Commission for Refugees (CNR) resumed on August 17th, after having been suspended for almost two months. Since then, 335 refugees were registered, while 2,442 were still asylum seekers and waited for registration.
