Highlights

  • Dry conditions intensified in the southern half of the region, threatening production prospects in several areas. Abnormally high temperatures accompanied these dry conditions. Short term rainfall forecasts suggest little respite in the near-term.

  • Good rains were received in the northern half of the region, promoting good crop conditions.

  • A cyclone made landfall in Madagascar, causing fatalities, displacement of populations, damage to infrastructure and flooding of thousands of hectares planted to rice.

Violence has been raging for the past several months in the Provinces of Tanganyika and South Kivu, which are in the south east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). These provinces are plagued by inter-ethnic violence and clashes between the regular army, militia and armed groups.

Children are the first victims of the clashes. Villages are burnt down, schools are destroyed and health centres are looted, leading to mass displacement of people. There are 654,000 displaced persons in Tanganyika, of whom 462,000 are children.

  • Between 20th and 22nd January 2018, some 1,640 new refugee arrivals from the Democratic of the Congo (DRC) crossed to Uganda via Kisoro and Kanungu (1,389) and Lake Albert (251), bringing the total number of new arrivals since 18th December 2017 to 12,306.

The security and humanitarian situation in Kinshasa province continues to deteriorate. On 21 January anti-Kabila demonstrations in the capital resulted in 6 deaths, 65 injured, and some 250 people were arrested.

Cholera cases continue to rise in the province following heavy rainfall since early January: 346 cases and 11 deaths were reported in the two first weeks of 2018.
