Mauritania hosts over 2,000 urban refugees and asylumseekers and more than 55,000 Malian refugees in Mbera, a camp established in 2012 in the arid south-eastern region close to the Malian border.

Despite the conclusion of a peace agreement in 2015, large-scale returns of Malian refugees are not expected due to persistent violence in northern Mali. In March alone, 928 new arrivals were registered in Mbera.

As the situation in northern Mali continues to be unstable, Mauritania struggles to cope with the growing needs of new refugees and the vulnerable host communities.

La République démocratique du Congo (RDC) est frappée par l’une des plus graves crises humanitaires au monde. Le pays est aussi confronté à une épidémie de choléra. Des millions de personnes dépendent d’une assistance humanitaire. Les représentants de plusieurs Etats et des organisations humanitaires se sont réunis aujourd’hui à Genève pour soutenir la réponse internationale à cette crise. Il s’agissait de la première conférence humanitaire de haut-niveau consacrée à la RDC. La Suisse soutiendra les opérations d’urgence à hauteur de 12,5 millions de francs pour cette année.

Highlights

• Uganda is host to the fastest growing refugee crisis in the world. As a result, Uganda is now Africa’s leading refugee-hosting country and has jumped from the 8th largest refugee-hosting country in the world in mid-2016 to the 3rd largest, after Turkey and Pakistan, today.

• UNICEF and partners are supporting the Government respond to the increasing refugee influx from DRC. In addition to conflict, the refugees have experienced a cholera outbreak that has affected over 2,000 people, including 40 deaths.

(Geneva, 13 April 2018) International donors today announced US$528 million to support the delivery of urgently needed humanitarian aid to millions of people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The announcements were made at a humanitarian conference in Geneva co-chaired by the United Nations, the European Union and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

While many countries have increased their support, the estimated amount of USD 530 million announced today by the United Nations would be far from sufficient to meet the needs of 10.5 million people targeted in the Humanitarian Response Plan. This year, USD 1.7 billion are required to assist affected populations in DR Congo.

Bern, 13.04.2018 - The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is gripped by one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. The country now also faces a cholera epidemic, while millions of its people are dependent on humanitarian assistance. Representatives of several states and humanitarian organisations met today in Geneva to support the international response to this crisis. This was the first high-level humanitarian conference devoted to the DRC. Switzerland will provide CHF 12.5 million this year to support emergency operations in the country.
