HIGHLIGHTS

  • Over 900 new arrivals registered in Unity: In Yida refugee settlement, UNHCR registered 915 new arrivals (457F, 458M) including 682 children. Cumulatively, 10,709 new arrivals have been registered in 2017. Last year within the same period, 9,583 new arrivals were registered, which represents 10% increase due to the increased number of children leaving their parents in South Kordofan to pursue education opportunities.

The International Development Secretary Priti Patel has called for the international community to act now and not forget the millions of people displaced by increasing levels of violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Ms Patel’s call came as she announced vital lifesaving support for hundreds of thousands of victims of political insecurity and increasing levels of violence in the DRC.

The crisis has forced 3.8 million people to flee their homes, resulting in widespread malnutrition, disease and suffering in many regions of the DRC.

UNHCR in 2017 – by the numbers

As of September 2017, UNHCR’s budget is at an historic high of $7.763 billion, which is currently 46% funded

This growth is concurrent with the unabated levels of global displacement, with 67.7 million people of concern to UNHCR worldwide.

The funding gap is widening, now standing at 54%. Based on indications received from donors and analysis of funding trends, UNHCR estimates the gap may reduce to 47% by year’s end.

Mauritania hosts over 2,000 urban refugees and asylum seekers and almost 52,000 Malian refugees in Mbera, a camp established in 2012 in the arid south-eastern region close to the Malian border.

Despite the conclusion of a peace agreement in 2015, large-scale returns of Malian refugees are not expected due to persistent violence in northern Mali. In September alone, 471 new arrivals were registered in Mbera.

Country update

The total caseload of South Sudan refugees in DRC as of 30 June 2017 is 80,775. In the first half of the year, refugees from South Sudan continued to arrive into DRC, namely in Ituri and Haut Uele province. As of 30 June 2017, 13,542 refugees had arrived in the first semester of 2017, against 61,125 arrivals in 2016.
