Today Thomas Silberhorn, the Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, ended his three-day visit to Iraq and Jordan. Humanitarian need remains very high in many humanitarian crisis situations in Africa. Germany has therefore made an additional 8.2 million euros available for humanitarian relief projects run by UN organisations and NGOs in Africa.

01.03.2013 Berlin – The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development today presented a new development strategy for fragile and conflict-ridden states.
The new strategy is entitled "Development for Peace and Security: Development Policy in the Context of Conflict, Fragility and Violence". It replaces the Cross-Sectoral Strategy on Crisis Prevention, Conflict Management and Peace-Building from 2005.
Germany is making available 1 million euros to the United Nations Childrens’ Fund (UNICEF) in order to help the victims of violence from paramilitary combat units in Africa. UNICEF is implementing projects to protect and reintegrate child soldiers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Uganda and the Central African Republic.
Minister of State Cornelia Pieper issued the following statement in Berlin today (7 November):
The Federal Government is making available a further 1.2 million euros for emergency supplies for internally displaced persons and refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In this connection Minister of State Cornelia Pieper commented today (16 June) as follows:
“We must not allow the various crises in the north of the continent to blind us to the continuing crisis in the Congo, which has persisted for years. Over 100,000 people have been displaced in the past few weeks alone. They are in urgent need of our assistance.”

The Federal Foreign Office has made available a further 1.6 million euro to fund emergency aid for refugees and internally displaced persons in the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The money will be used to provide emergency accommodation and medical care for people who have fled outbreaks of fighting in their villages and home districts.
The Federal Foreign Office has channelled 500,000 euro to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to fund emergency aid for refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DC Congo).
Since October the country's Equateur Region along the Ubangi River bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been the scene of violent clashes between rival ethnic groups. Over 100 people have been killed and around 180,000 forced to leave their villages; around half the refugees have sought shelter in the neighbouring Republic of the Congo.

2008 was a year of major humanitarian challenges. Natural disasters such as Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, the devastating earthquake in China, flooding in India and Brazil or the hurricanes in the Caribbean once again highlighted the dangers of the unbridled forces of nature. In the complex political crises in Africa, as well as in Afghanistan and Iraq, unresolved conflicts made it impossible to improve the precarious humanitarian situation of people living there.
From 8 to 12 December, Dr Peter Wittig, Head of the Federal Foreign Office Directorate-General for the United Nations and Global Issues, will visit the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Following the recent violent conflicts in eastern Congo, the Federal Foreign Office will increase its humanitarian aid to a total of 7 million euro this year. The additional 1 million euro will support projects aimed at getting supplies to internally displaced persons in North Kivu Province, particularly around the provincial capital Goma.
For many people in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo the humanitarian situation remains alarming, with continued sexual violence against women and children as well as other atrocities against the civilian population. Since August 2007 some 170,000 have fled North Kivu Province.
In response the Federal Foreign Office has again increased by one million euro its humanitarian assistance for the victims of the conflict.
In view of the escalating violence in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Federal Foreign Office has made available an additional 470,000 euro for humanitarian assistance for the victims. Of this sum, 200,000 euro goes to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to provide care and shelter and some 270,000 euro goes to Germany's Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the main focuses of German humanitarian assistance. In 2007 the Federal Foreign Office has already made available a total of around 2.7 million euro for aid measures there organized by German NGOs and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
