Therefore, we very much welcome the fact that France, currently presiding over the Council, has initiated a discussion on this issue", said Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger in connection with yesterday's first fundamental debate on the "respect for humanitarian international law" in New York.

Ministerial Council decides on Austria's participation in EU support mission to Congo

Vienna, 4 May 2006 - "After decades of civil war and foreign military interventions the first free parliamentary and presidential elections will be held before the end of this year. Free and peaceful elections constitute an important step towards the stabilisation of this sorely afflicted country and thus of the entire region. The European Union is prepared to support the Congolese people in these efforts.
