By Hervé Ladsous, Under-Secretary-General for the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations
Eighteen months ago, Bentiu, like most towns in South Sudan, was bustling with the restlessness of markets, people trading and children going to school. UNMISS, the UN Mission in South Sudan, was busy supporting development and growth in the world's youngest nation.
United Nations peacekeeping operations had made significant headway in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mali this year, a senior official overseeing those missions told reporters at a Headquarters press conference today.
“It has been an active year,” said Hervé Ladsous, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, as he recalled major developments, including the Congolese army’s victory against the 23 March Movement (M23) armed group.
Evolving to meet new challenges
Despite the fragile situation in southern Lebanon, both sides were respecting resolution 1701 (2006) — which calls for a full cessation of hostilities between Hizbullah and Israel — the Commander of United Nations troops in the area said at a Headquarters press conference today.
“Calm is prevailing,” said Major General Paolo Serra, Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which is mandated to monitor the cessation of hostilities, assist the Government and Armed Forces of Lebanon and support the local population.
United Nations peacekeepers must be constantly equipped with more and better tools and skills so they could fully meet their mandates in increasingly risky environments, Hervé Ladsous, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, said at Headquarters today.
Overview and background
Leadership of the Security Council
The Security Council has played a leading role in raising global awareness of the links between AIDS and security. Through landmark resolutions 1308 in 2000 and 1983 in 2011, the Security Council has galvanized global action to integrate HIV responses in uniformed services. In this regard, the UN has led by example, addressing HIV as an integral component of its own peacekeeping missions in diverse settings.
Remarkable but challenging year
In 2011, over two dozen United Nations peacekeeping and special political missions worked to provide security and stability, facilitate political processes, protect civilians, help refugees return, support elections, demobilize and reintegrate former combatants, and promote human rights and the rule of law.
« Les Nations Unies doivent continuer à renforcer leurs partenariats avec l’Union africaine et les autres acteurs régionaux pour faire face à la myriade de défis auxquels sont confrontés les pays africains », a indiqué, aujourd’hui, au Siège des Nations Unies à New York, le Secrétaire général adjoint aux opérations de maintien de la paix.
Briefing correspondents at Headquarters on the situations in South Sudan and other African countries, Hervé Ladsous, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, said that tackling the myriad challenges on the continent required the United Nations to continue strengthening its partnership with the African Union and other regional actors.
New York, 22 November 2011 - Sunday, 20 November marked Universal Children’s Day, a day to remember the children growing up in wars throughout the world, and to reaffirm our commitment to stand up for their rights and to take firm action.
Fresh from addressing the Security Council, the commanders of four United Nations peacekeeping missions in Africa and the Middle East addressed a Headquarters press conference today on their efforts to protect civilians in Darfur, address charges of human trafficking among senior peacekeepers in Liberia and, more generally, implement measures to ensure that troops everywhere were held to the highest standards of conduct.
Officials of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations stressed the importance of strengthening the rule of law as a key part of peacekeeping, as they marked the ninth International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers at a Headquarters press conference this afternoon.

UN study urges greater action in peacekeeping to include women in peace processes
New York, United Nations, 8 February 2011 - Greater action is needed by United Nations peacekeeping missions - working with local women, national authorities and UN Member States - to increase the limited participation of women in peace negotiations, national security institutions and governance in post-conflict situations, says a UN study launched today.
